How about starting today with a pair of Quality C top action hammer guns with Bernard barrels?

I have the one with lesser case colors and matted rib and which was a New York salesroom gun. A buddy who farms outside a small Ozarks town owns the other with more case colors and smooth rib.

I've gotta get me one of those towels, though I think I'll use a different color.

Very nice Grade 4 guns Bruce and "farmer buddy".

very nice - it would be easy to mix the pics.

really like the dogs on there - especially the floor plate work (even the pointer)

the towel is a nice running joke, but honestly Bruce -keep them coming, you have shown us some great old guns

Its very common that hammers will be different between like guns of the same grade. Even on O grade guns you find differences in hammers. That makes it tough to match if a gun is missing a hammer. Tell you what , I'll start another thread with hammers. You will see huge differences.

If its the lack of yellow towels that prevents people from posting pictures of their guns, we'll buy a couple cases and start giving out towels.

beautiful, what frame size? would the grade 5 #1 frame 12 ga 28" barrels I have fit?

Bruce Day

No. These are 2 frame guns. But Joe, if you have a nice set of fine damascus 1 frame hammer gun barrels, I'll bet all you have to do is make it known that they are available and it wouldn't take long. Is that the case?

The barrels are Damascus, SN 72709, off a top action hammergun in excellent original condition. I live close to Larry DelGrego who upon seeing the barrels told me to unite them with a high grade gun. The gun letters as made for the 1893 Chicago Worlds Fair along with later NYS expos. Unfortunately as i am sure you are aware it seems only 2 hammerguns were made in this configuration therefore my quest will be a long one. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Joe, I understand the situation, very interesting.

Yes, there are only two Quality B 28" 12 ga top action hammer guns. There is one C and one A also 28" . Lets make sure they are off a 1 frame, probably so, but please measure center to center barrel at the breech end and see what you find. If they are 2 frame, then there are many more possible fits.

There are three people here who I would turn to immediately with serious questions about serious hammer guns, Gary, Charlie and Robin. I suspect there are many opportunities to cobble these fine damascus barrels on a lesser gun, but IMHO, these should be treated right.

Ideas from others?

This is a B lifter action hammer gun, so you can see what is missing. They are works of art. I'm fortunate to just have a C, all are so rare.

Bruce, thanks for your help. measured barrels best i can, seem to be 1 1/16 but could be 1 1/8th very hard to measure. They are stamped with #1 on lug and marked DD with barrel weight of 3lbs 10 oz if this helps. Much easier to measure firing pins on center.

Amazing the number of guns from that era that have Dogs on the bottom backed by a fence.

Joe, I'm a little late with my information, but if you put shells in the barrels, the pin centers are easier to measure.

That DD stamp indicates “Finest Damascus Steel” and are most likely of 5-iron crolle.

And that's why as we age time seems to fly by.

Time doesn't "seem" to fly by, it does fly by, and at an increasing rate. Proof of this, is that we are only able to do half as much in a day, as we used to.
