Removing barrel's

I have a VH that's being a pain ...the barrel's won't come off,I tried cocking them with the forend off/on to no avail ,the only way they will come off is to remove the hook screw which I'm not fond of doing each and every time I break her down...I'm thinking I've seen this on the forum before16766

Have you tried firing both barrels, removing the forend and then seeing if the barrels come off? This will usually allow the barrels to come free of the receiver and is an indication of a malfunction but I can't remember the part involved.

As a temporary expedient, drop in two snap caps, trip the locks, remove forend. The barrels should now turn off the frame. Hopefully.

You need a good double smith to see what's actually wrong and correct the proglem.

If all the other suggestions fail, you will be having to do some surgery. What might be happening is that you have a sticky unhooking slide.

Removing the hook screw on the barrels is one way. BUT, this may not be able to be done since the screw head does not always clear the water table when the gun is opened.

What you may have to do is remove the trigger plate, along with the cocking slide so that you can gain access to the cocking hook from the underside. It is very tricky, but you have to push forward on the hook, while keeping the cocking cam back AND also opening the action.
I had to do this jsut the other day to a Trojan that was missing the plunger on the unhooking slide, thus not providing enough pressure to unhook the cam.

*another tip if doing this. Take the stock right off. The only extra operation needed to do this is to remove the sears.

No sweat ,I'm quite capable believe it or not.I was just looking for a quick answer;)...I was thinking it was what Brian mentioned,so that's where I'll head to ,all the other fix's mentioned were already tried.

Be patient!! The unhooking slide is sticking. The plunger which purtrudes from the end of the receiver is probably in the retracted position. Use CRP on the plunger and let it soak for a few days. The oil will seep into the lower portion of the receiver where the slide is located and begin to losen the gunk. You can hasten the process by puting oil inside the lower portion of the receiver in the area of the slide ( be sure to tip the gun so oil does not run to the stock).
I have had this problem with a number of closet guns and have solved all problems without disassembly.

The un-hooking slide is more than likely the problem. The spring that operates it is fairly small in diameter and can be prone to rusting problems due to it being a hard place to keep it oiled.

I've had two guns with the same problem. Both of these had broken slide return springs. If Bob's method doesn't work, pull the slide out of the frame & inspect the spring.
