View Full Version : Parkers for Argentina

We are headed back to Argentina at the end of the month. This year we are once again with Diego and Felipe of www.southernwingoutfitters.com and we will be shooting in NW Argentina at Las Termas near Tucuman. We'll do ducks in the morning and doves or pigeons in the afternoons. It is a lovely area with a mild climate similar to the Central Valley of California. Any place one can shoot ducks surrounded by orange groves is OK with me...:rotf: Russ Bickel and I shot there a few years ago. The blinds are literally 10 -15 minutes front the lakeside hotel. Our hosts have the only hunting on what must be a 50,000 acre lake. Once again the pleasant problem of "what guns to take?" raises its irrascible head. Unlike many outfitters who stock 12 and 20 gauge only, Diego is a 16 gauge shooter and has plenty of cartouches in 16. (27 gram loads of 8s for doves and 30 gram loads of 5s for the ducks) As no one bought it at Hidden Hollow, I think I'll take my 32" #1 frame 16g VHE and one of the guns I got from Russ' estate, a 30" 20g #0 frame DHE straight grip sans safety (which makes it convenient for volume doves) with .022/.028 it should have plenty of choke for the tall ones. I normally take Winchester M21s in 12 and 20 but I think this will be a Parker year:cool:

Two weeks in Africa in August...no Parkers however just a .470NE double rifle and a leftie M70 in .375 H&H...as Russ used to say, "Ah, the Sporting Life..."

More hand wringing:eek: this happens every time...I just filled out the forms...I have to take a 12 gauge...I've learned my lesson too many times in the bush in out of the way places and shooting ducks on big water...I'll take my "travel" 32" A.H. Fox HE 12 gauge and the 32" 16 gauge VHE...:cuss: I may throw a couple of boxes of paper Western Super X coppered 4s in the duffel just in case there are some 'tall ones' as Nash would say...sometimes those flocks of tree ducks just cruise by at 45 yards...use enough gun...

Depending on where your going in Africa I'd take along a shotgun also. Nothing beats shooting Sand Grouse as they come to water in the evening.

Thanks Rich. I have shot sand grouse a number of times in the Kalahari and the Namib as well as ducks, geese, doves, francolin and quail. This will be my 7th African safari. We'll be right on the Limpopo in Zim near the border with RSA and Mozambique this time. Although it's 14day trip, I doubt I'll have much time for bird hunting. They'll be a shotgun in camp if I do.

I just returned from a weeks trip to Argentina, around Lincoln, about 6 hours west of BA. Shot 5 1/2 days and it was the best ever. Lots of open water and mucho ducks. Two guns and we killed 842 ducks and 5 pigeons in total. The limit with this outfitter, Patagonia Outfitters, is six boxes of shells a day. I took a 12 and a 28 with me but long shots and lots of wind so only used the 12.
This trip is getting more expensive every year with the 25% Argentine inflation and rising airline costs. May be my last.
Good luck!
David

Dean, I have never seen a Nitro Express cartridge chambered in a bolt action.

As far as big game rifles go, my current one is just a Chapuis Brousse in .470NE. I have owned John Wilkes in .470NE and .375 H&H Flanged, a Coggie in .375 H&H Flanged, a lovely Westley Richards PH in .500/.465 and another Chapuis in .30/06. I also currently have a .458 Lott, a .404 Jeffery and a .375 H&H in Winchester M70 left hand CRF rifles. I used a LH M70 in .470 Capstick for couple of safaris but getting the ammo was a PITA. My rule now is-if Cheaper than Dirt doesn't sell the ammo, I don't buy the rifle...although if I found a good deal on a British double in .475 No.2..well...

My long time PH for many years carries a .470NE Chapuis or a magnum Mauser actioned.505 Gibbs depending on the hunt and terrain. I figure if a Chapuis is good enough for him...

Secret message for Dean. .500 Jeffrey is considered a Nitro Express and was originally the .500 Schuler, a cartridge designed for the Schuler "Jumbo", a really big bolt gun. One of our gun club members used a .500 Jumbo for years and his widow offered it for sale a few years ago. It is a $15,000 gun and we (meaning I) had no idea what it was and let it be swept up by a Left Coast dealer. What the heck, someone has probably chambered a bolt gun for the .470 NE at some time or other.

I know just how you fellows feel about hard to find ammo. Here's my big game rifle, well, if you count woodchucks as big game. Its a 25-20 and I have to order the ammo because Jake's Hardware down the street doesn't carry it.

always wanted a nice old lever gun, looked long and hard at a decent '73 rifle in 38-40 at an antique show a few weeks ago.

Dean you don't need to hunt dangerous game to use enough gun. I have taken Whitetails with my .416 Taylor. Big hole in big hole out and with very little meat damage. I've torn up a deer worse with a 270 than the Taylor.

I used a .458 Win Mag to take a doe here on my farm. Despite derogatory articles by certain gun scribes over the years, the .458 proved to be a perfectly adequate caliber for this arduous task ...use enough gun...

I couldn't agree more Don. I shot a doe with the Taylor using a 325gr Hawk soft point, it hit her in the chest and exited her back ham. One very dead deer no meat damage to speak of.
I used the Taylor in Africa for everything from Warthogs to Buffalo:)

Rick, my gun show table mate has a very nice refinished Model 73 in 32-20. It is a blued frame gun that looks original from just a few feet away. Nice wood and bore. Where are you located? I believe the gun is priced to sell.

I guess it all depends on bullet placement. A double-lung shot or a heart shot will do little damage to meat (although I do enjoy the heart) but the best for dropping your game in it's tracks is the spine shot - preferably high on the shoulder blade or close to the head. A well placed broadhead will do even less damage to the meat... eh, Larry?

I hate to chase a game animal mostly because my Indian tracking skills suck. My favorite shot placement in on the point of the shoulder, you lose some burger but the animal drops in it's tracks.
This year it will be the 375 & 300 H&H's that go to the deer blind....maybe a 7x57AI also....maybe.

Any one use or have experience with a 45 110 on deer?

A compressed 110 gr. charge of#2 black powder under a 500 gr. bullet would really rattle your fillings.

I was out today at the range with the .375 H&H and the .470NE. I had put a new 30mm scope on the .375 and needed to start practicing with the double rifle. Luckily, after I set up the new scope with the collimator and leveled it, it only need 4 shots at 50 yards to get it set up. I let the rifle cool down My first 3 shots at 100 yards were 1 1/2" high above the bullseye and covered and a half dollar would have covered the group. This is very unusual (for me) so I put the .375 H&H away:eek:and shot the double. At an even 10 lbs. shooting off hand, it gets your attention:shock: so after a dozen rounds I quit. I put all of them in a six inch circle...also unusual so I packed up while I was ahead...the other young fellow at the range shooting his Glock and AR had never seen a double rifle. When I told him the cartridges were developed in 1908 and 1912 he asked if I was really taking antiques to Africa...kids...:crying:
