View Full Version : “Heat of the Summer” – Young Shooters “Virtual” Summer Competition
John Dunkle
05-28-2012, 04:05 PM
Mary and I are often asked by Members, and non-Members alike, what “Phase II” of our Youth Initiative would encompass – and when it would be announced. Well – after several conversations and careful deliberations between the two of us – WELCOME to.........
Heat of the Summer
Begins June 1, 2012 and ends August 31, 2012
Rules- they are really short and easy to understand (hey, there are only two of us – so don’t be looking for some elaborate set of rules, OK?? ;) )
The youth competitor must be 21 years or YOUNGER the first time they shoot their “registered” targets. Registered targets can be shot and scored beginning June 1, 2012. If the youth shooter turns over 21 after they shoot their first set of targets – they are still registered to compete for the duration of the competition (which ends 8/31/12).
If a young shooter is NOT currently a Member of the youth program – complimentary Membership will be awarded to them if they compete and complete one (or all) of the competition events; and
In the event the registered shooter is already a PGCA youth member, their membership will be extended for another year after their current expiration date.
Competition Venues:
Each youth participant can compete in one or all of the following events:
Trap – single or doubles –must shoot at least 250 targets total during the three month competition time frame;
Skeet – Modern or Classic - must shoot at least 250 targets total during the three month competition time frame;
5-Stand - must shoot at least 250 targets total during the three month competition time frame; and
Sporting Clays - must shoot at least 500 targets total during the three month competition time frame.
If a competitor shoots more than the minimum targets (250, 250, 250, 500) – their HIGHEST scores will be used to count for the segment overall score.
If any shooter shoots any venue with a Side-by-Side (12 gauge MAXIMUM), or TRAP with a Classic American Single Barrel (Parker, Ithaca, L.C., etc) – their score will automatically be increased by 4 birds for each 25 rounds.
So, for example, if a young person shoots a 100 target sporting clays course with an Side-by-Side (SxS) and scores an 80 – their final adjusted total will be 96. Credits WILL also carry over into other sessions/events shot with a SxS.
Scoring. This is the honor system. Simply post up the shooters First name and LAST INITIAL ONLY – and the actual score, which event, the location it was shot, date, and the gauge & type of shotgun used. If shot with a SxS - I will "adjust" their score in the scorebook, so please post actual targets hit – so – for example –
Jane S. – 82 of 100 – Sporting Clays – Danvers MA – 6/10/12 - 20 GA Parker VHE
(I would enter it as a 98 into the scorebook, as there is a 4 bird per 25 bonus shot with a Parker).
Pictures would be a “BONUS”!!!
Prizes and Awards:
Each registered shooter who completes at least one event will receive
A PGCA Annual Membership;
In the event the registered shooter is already a PGCA Youth member, their membership will be extended for an additional year;
A Certificate of Completion for each event completed;
An embroidered or Pin “Merit Badge” which may be sewn or affixed to a hat, shooting vest, etc. A merit badge will be awarded for each event completed.
Individual “High Gun” awards will be awarded as such:
Achievement Award– Highest combined overall score shot with a Parker – all events; and
Top Gun – Highest combined overall score – all events;
High-Gun Trap– Highest Overall Score – Trap;
High-Gun Skeet– Highest Overall Score – Skeet;
High-Gun 5-Stand– Highest Overall Score – 5-Stand; and
High-Gun Sporting Clays – Highest Overall Score – Sporting Clays.
And lastly – and award will be given out for the Most Enthusiastic Youth Competitor for this “Heat of the Summer” series.
My Best to all,
John

May I suggest that we all print these rules and post them on the bulletin boards of the clubs we shoot at to encourage other shooters to get the young folks involved and to show what the PGCA is doing to support youth programs.

That, Dean - is a wonderful idea!

If I post this to my gun club, how do they communicate to the PGCA? Is there a special email address or must they all get a login on out forum?

They can always contact me. I'm at john (at) reutterwerk.com. Always have been. Always will be. ;)

Again - what a great idea. To facilitate your idea - click on the attachment in this post - print it out - and I'd suggest adding a contact phone or e-mail address to the printed version.
I'll probably catch some flak from someone for something about this - but honestly? I really don't give a darn... ;) So, if you see a typo...?? :)
Let the games begin,

John, can you add contact info to the bottom of the pdf to make it easier to register the shooters with the "central tabulation bureau" (probably you or Mary) and we can print the form and distribute it knowing the registration process will be streamlined?
Thanks, Dean

Hi Dean,
Quick question..?? Given that you, and others - are going to be printing out these rules, do we want to open up that 4 bird per 25 bonus to ANY SxS shooter? In the rules, it states "Parkers" - but, I'm thinking about the youth L.C. kids, the youths shooting Fox SxSs, etc..
My inclination is to make it for those shooting Side-By-Side shotguns, rather than "Parker" specific??
What are your thoughts?
Thanks again!
John
Dean Romig
05-31-2012, 11:47 AM
John, you raise a very valid issue. My thoughts are that any youth shooting any classic American SXS shotgun in these competitions should be given the 4 bird advantage but that a shooter of a Parker shotgun be awarded a special prize or award. Other opinions are welcome of course.
John Dunkle
05-31-2012, 01:12 PM
Hi Dean - and all..
Take a look at this version:
http://parkerguns.org/forums/showpost.php?p=70883&postcount=1
Look OK? I added the Achievement Award to be Parker specific - and opened the event to any SxS, rather than just American SxS's (On a personal note, at 12 yrs, I started shooting "trap" with a W.C. Scott from my great-grandfather - and I would have hated to have been excluded from an event like this)..??
John
John Dunkle
05-31-2012, 05:21 PM
OK - FINALLY!!! ;) Attached is the Final.. And - of course, with a few changes....
The change Dean & I were discussing is incorporated; and
If you shoot the TRAP venue with an American Classic SBT (Parker, Ithaca, L.C. Smith, etc), or a classic SxS - you will have a four bird bonus. (Thanks Dave!)
The reason for the change in the trap rules is to encourage the youths to shoot the Classic SBT designs
Anyway - I'll edit the first announcement post in this thread accordingly...
My thanks again - and let the games begin!

I printed 50 of the "Heat of the Summer" information sheets and brought them to Hausmann's last weekend. We put about half of them on the PGCA tables and I was going to bring the rest of them to the registration office but discovered that Deb Frey had already done it... (great minds think alike) We had only three left on the table when we left at midday on Sunday and I sincerely hope they ran out of them at the registration desk.

Hey Mr. Tom!
If you designated your tremendous Youth Donation for a shooter in this competition - Ms. Mary Bowes would be the one to ask.. If it was a general Youth Membership donation, it is being held in our larger donation pool while Youth Members apply to our Youth program...
My best to you and Irene (well, moreso Irene - 'cause she always smiling ;) )

Thank you all for deciding to have this summer shoot for youths! :D I especially enjoy shooting sporting clays with a 28 ga. parker DHE and i am learning to shoot it quite well. This winter the Del Monte Gun Club of Alamosa, Colorado had winter league shoot and i did pretty good in my class (which was youth class B) I took first with an average of about 67. Also, i won my class shooting a parker SXS.

Mr. John Sir, Thanks for your reply. Thank you for your well wishes and I'll pass them on to Irene. I don't teally know how the donation was used. Maybe Miss Mary will see this post and let me know. Thanks, Tom

Nice work Danny! I haven't heard any reports from the others yet but your post should get a rise from some of the folks.
That 15 score was your practice round, right? I've seen you shoot and you can break clays consistently when your head is in the game. Keep it up Danny!

I had asked about an extension for son Wyatt due to the the local and state fair committments. A couple of folks gave support but we didn't/haven't seen whether or not he could do this. He did shoot with me last weekend with the 28 repro. By the way, I shot the 32" DHE I showed awhile back for the first time. All targets on the course could have been broken with a SK or IC choke. Needless to say my score was rather low, but when I hit them there was no doubt! I love that gun. Trap like targets evaporated. Need to try that game with it.

In re-reading the rules as to what was needed to complete the youth challenge, I withdraw my request regarding extending Wyatt's time due to other conflicts, such as his state fair obligations. I will pay his renewal as a PGCA youth member and encourage him to budget his time more seriously next time. Life is about choices and setting priorities and I think the requirement to finish his committments on time is a good life lesson. He will no doubt compete in our local Winter League again but I also hope we have another PGCA summer youth program so he can try again next year. He has certainly learned something from this by not getting a pass for not finishing on time. Looking back we could have easily worked it in.

The world needs more Dads like you. "Tough Love" is hard to do sometimes but we are all the better for it. I know there were times I wasn't real happy with my Dad's decisions about me but I benefitted from those decisions and the standard was set for the kind of Dad I became.

Great to see the enthusiasm from all the young competitors, wonderful that the PGCA is so fervently encouraging their participation, and hats off to the parents who allow themselves to be bested by the Whippersnapper Division!
I've had several occasions to shoot sporting clays with Edward Blake, and was pretty much convinced that nobody his age (and only a scant few adults) could shoot as well. Great to hear that Matt is keeping him honest! When I grow up hopefully I'll be able to shoot as well!
Nicely done Austin, and with a pump gun no less! I'd love to see the look on some of the codgers faces as they break down their high dollar O/Us and slide them into the trunks of their Beemers!
Hey Danny, nice job! Add Lizard to the list of folks who got older yesterday! She turned 21, all by herself, down in Georgia, 600 miles away from dear old Dad. I did send down a handle of North Dakota Apple Pie, hopefully she'll be able to figure out what to do with it. She was only home for a short while this past summer, and between work and a few online classes, she only had a couple of opportunities to shoot. She was bummed that she couldn't participate, but hopefully she'll be on board for the next competition. She's looking forward to seeing everyone in Georgetown.
Once again, thanks to the PGCA folks who realize that the future of our double gun enjoyment lies with the Next Generation.

The gun Matt Grunzweig is shooting is really unusual. It's a Beretta UGB25. It's a single barrel, break open, two shot semi automatic. :eek: http://www.ugb25xcel.com/ . Beretta advertises it as the lowest-recoiling gun available. Good thing, 'cause Matt is about 6'1", and 120#. The torch is being passed. He's now beating me most of the time

Well... Finally.....
It took over a month to get these designed, made, etched and finished - but.... The Awards from our first Youth Contest are finished! I just picked them up and - they are stunning... I hope you agree....
I was going to frame some certificates, but - frankly, I wanted something that wouldn't fade or 'get lost" as the Youth Members grew older... I was going to do some "patches" - but, patches are hard to display correctly... I thought about hats for the winners - but - hats get torn and lost... I wanted something more permanent... Something that would last...
So, here is one of the Awards - custom designed - and each of the four winners will be mailed their own trophy when I have a moment to get to the UPS store or USPS...
http://parkerguns.org/forums/picture.php?albumid=302&pictureid=4113
Congratulations to all the winners - and I really hope the PGCA announces the next version of a Youth Competition soon - as I'm coaching two young shooters who would be a "natural" to enter..!
Best to all...!!!

Hello, I would like to take the time to thank PGCA for this wonderful oppurtunity for the "Heat of the Summer" contest. I enjoyed it very much and grateful for the oppurtunity to allow young shooters to compete in competition. Great job to all of the contestants.
