Period Correct Recoil Pad Question

I have an 1877 plain twist lifter, grade 0. As I received it there is no pad or butt plate and the butt is flat with tang inletting on the top heel and evidence of old adhesive on the butt. I figured it either came from the factory with a pad or someone cut the stock and put one on at some point. Whatever was there is gone now. My qestion is what would be the period apropriate pad (or close) for this gun? I figure that is easier than cutting the curve to refit a steel butt plate and would make the LOP more usable for me. Thanks.

If it were me, I merely get a Galazan Period pad with spur and fit it up. Or... if you're flush with Stimulus Money, get a real Silver's.

This is the original pad that all high-grade gun companies used. It is exactly like the pre- World War II Silvers pad. Early guns by Purdey, Parker, Fox, Ithaca, Winchester, Holland, Sauer, Merkel, L.C. Smith, etc. would have been shipped with this pad.

One thing no note about the Galazan silvers pad with spir is that the spir is pretty small. The spir usually does not come anywhere near matching the original parker spir.

Echo that. Silvers is located in the olde train station adjacent what passes for downtown Mildenhall , Suffolk. Near them is an olde bicycle shop with Pashleys, Raleighs, Swallows, Darrows and other boxes of Simplex and Sturmey Archer parts. And not far away is Norfolk, complete with an old bespoke gunmaker of sidelock shot guns. I was stationed at Mildenhall with the USAF and at Odiham with the RAF and bicycled past fields dotted with pheasants. Heaven for a traditionalist of guns, rods and bicycles.

Or you can cut the spur off the pad - fit it - and then use black epoxy to fill in the spur area. If done right it's hard to detect. Paul

I have done something similar to that, it works well.

Well it's not period correct, but I ended up going with the Noshoc pad. I tried CSMC's period correct Silvers remake, but it was much too large. This is a little 1 frame gun with a cut stock. I would have had to grind so much off the Silvers that I would have to also reshape the butt of the pad to keep it from looking off. Not too much grinding to fit the Noshoc. We will see how it turns out. At least no more wood is being cut so I can always try something else later.

since you already have the pad, you might as well use it. But... there is ONE more alternative: CSMC's Winchester red pad. While it is not totally correct, it IS offered in two sizes and has plugs like a Silvers. What you do is fit the pad, then grind off the Win. logo etc. and smooth with water lubed wet-or-dry. Leave the edges square or round slightly. To the casual eye, it looks like a Silvers. I've done this trick many times.

The NoShoc is the Winchester pad in its civilian attire, or the Winchester pad is a NoShoc with a Winchester logo.

We should probably say "Period Correct Aftermarket Pad" for a 1877 Lifter :)
The first Parker fitted with a "Silvers Recoil Butt" was DH #56553 in 1891
Until then a "Recoil Boot" would have been used.
