I’ve received a few e-mails today telling me that the site was off-line for a little bit. Thanks! Anyway, what was happening was…

I host this site off two of my servers in the office, and this AM – one of my primary circuits was down due to a faulty DSLAM in one of the COs. Since I round-robin the IPs for this site in my DNS servers (I have four of them) – depending on when/how you dial in – there was a 50% chance that the circuit I was routing you through was down as well. That problem ticket was closed later this AM - BUT, that’s what was going on – in non-technical terms.

That being said – if I take down any of my servers (the PGCA uses three of my servers for various aspects of the website and two circuits) intentionally for an extended period of time (usually – anything over 10 minutes), you’ll typically see a notice I post up. If they are down for a shorter anticipated outage (for routine maintenance, I.E. - install a maintenance update, install a service pack, install new software, system snapshot, etc.) – I don’t put up a notice…

Anyway - if there is any problem with the servers, routers, circuits, software, DNSs, databases, etc. – I’m probably aware of it – BUT – I appreciate the e-mails this morning - just in case!!!..

Just thought I’d let you folks know what was going on this AM… While it does happen – fortunately, in doing this since September 2008, which is when I programmed the first codeset for the PGCA site on my servers – it only happens infrequently…

Thank for reading!

John
