Buckshot & Slug Question...

Have any of you ever used your Parker's for deer hunting?
If so, did you use buckshot or slugs? What kind of results did you have?
Anyone know where one can get slugs or buckshot loads in 16 gauge
2 1/2" shells?

Probably best bet is that you reload your own if you are going to use your vintage Parker. I don't know of any (RST) that make loads for buck shot.

I never reloaded for 16 but for twelve follow the recipes for 1oz bird lead shot and insert the number of buck shot balls that equal 1 oz and pattern. The same goes for 10.

As far as buckshot in a sixteen gauge I have some experience. I was loading 6 pellets of triple-ought buck in a low pressure 2-1/2" load. I kept them in my hip pocket for the feral hogs I ran across while out quail hunting. I bought a German drilling with tight original chokes. I looked at the end of the barrels and got worried about somehow bulging them with the large buckshot. I posted over on the Doublegun and several people posted with specific information that that shot was too large for a sixteen. You might do a search in the main section under "Buckshot" on the doublegun. A couple of the European members had quotes as I remember. Geno said to put a matchsticks in to keep the large buckshot in line.

I just got to thinking the other day;

These days we have a specialized gun or stringed instrument for each type of game and season we hunt.

I would imagine many of these old Parkers we have were used back in the day for anything and everything to put food on the table.

I would think many of these old Parkers had anything from small shot to
pumpkin balls shot threw them at one time or another.

When I was a kid nobody had anything but just regular choked barrels for shooting slugs out of. I was probably 20 years old before I saw my first real slug gun. I'd say most Parkers have had some 00 through them in time, and probably pumpkin balls as well.

no 1 buck shot is the standard load for the 16 ga for many years...ive used buckshot in my 10 ga parker with harm to my gun barrels and they are twist barrels...and are full choke barrels...ive used 000 00 0 and no 4 buckshot in the old ten ga...it will kill a deer cleanly at 40 yards.. hope you get a deer with that 16 ga... charlie

I had a 12 ga DH with damascus barrels that had a factory letter indicating it was patterned for buck shot so there is no doubt Parkers were used to hunt deer. Ray

In that thread I asked about double ought buck, not triple ought.

Researcher noted that the factory loads' largest size shot in sixteen was #1 buck.

i counted at least 5 double guns on the picture and i bet one of them is a parker.. some of the barrels look to be 30 inches or longer in lenth...probably some full choke guns in the bunch...wish i knew what they were shooting buckshot or slugs maybe both...my dad hunted im wisconsin for deer and at that time he used a double barrel stevans useing pumkin ball loads....i dont think accuracy was to good past 50 yards... charlie
