Sounds good Charlie. I was thinking about loading up some 12 gauge and trying it. My wife's family farm has so many deer I call it the zoo. Bucks and does are legal the whole season in that county. Mike

Charlie, many years/decades ago, factory loaded buckshot shells were labeled with the actual weight of the shot payload. Would you have to take into consideration the weight of 12 pellets of 00 buck in relation to a proper powder charge?

roundsworth this is the load i used.... a 00 buck pellet weighs 53.8 grains so this times 12 =653.6 = 1.49 ounce or 1 1/2 ounce... all info took from factory sorces...in fact i this was posted on this forem sometime back...part of these loads are took from mr bells pages of short ten loads...the other load is from a differant source it is a black powder load and i have not tried it yet... no 1 load mr bells.. no. 106 hull fed. primer win 209 bluedot powder 39 grains 1 1/2 bismuth x10x2 1/4 inch filler mr buffer 24 psb roll crimp pressure7100 psi velocity 1141 ..... i used lead instead of bismouth 1 1/2 ounce of 00 buck equal 12 pellets... the other load was black powder for the 10 gauge guns this is the way its stated... DEER cylinder bore only.... 5 drams 3 layer buckshot... both loads are for the 10 gauge the factory tends to lean to open bore guns... ive used this load of mr bells in my p grade hammerless parker....it patters very well at40 steps in a 30 inch circle... i will use this same load again trying to get a deer with the old parker... im not to good at posting things so maybe yall can make heads and tales of this post... charlie

Im going to settle in a blind this year and see if I can take the clubs record of coyotes. plan on bringing my 12ga load with 000 buck and a nice longer range rifle for those which may not come close enough.
Whats the best size buck shot for the longest range?
I may not have the best for my cause... Charlie what would you recommend for the longer shots??

For coyotes I think shot sizes 4, 2, or T would make pretty short work of any of those mangy critters.
Charlie, you make perfectly good sense.

kieth if i was gonna use buckshot for coyotes it would be no 4 buck...more pellets and plenty big enough to do the job....my personal choice would be bb s or no 2 s... as as been suggested.... glad you fellas could decipher my post....good luck with the coyotes.... charlie

And good luck to you guys with those deer. I will have my go at em next season Should I get the coyote population down the pawns will be free to roam and can grow in peace.

On a related note, I decided to see if it was feasible to cast your own 00 buckshot. Had seen the molds and they seemed a bit questionable. While I wouldn't recommend it for somebody who is a total novice at bullet-casting, if you are patient and know what you are doing, it isn't so bad really. The main thing is to prepare the mold properly and then get it hot, hot, hot!
The casting was actually easier than chopping the 3-ganged pellets apart, which is a bit tedious (you use a box cutting knife or similar instrument).
They do make molds for smaller buckshot, but I don't have that kind of patience.

them look like some nice buck shot!!!
I thought bout using some of the larger size but might keep it at a BB or 2 buck shot size for the yotes...
Has anyone seen casting dies for the smaller size buckshot??? Where could I get these at???

Midway has a #4 buck mold. I haven't seen anything smaller except what you can do with those Littleton Shot machines, which can make shot from size 5 to 9. So there's a "gap" in there.
From my experience with the 00 buck mold, it's kind of at the edge of viable hand-casting technology. The Littleton system goes to "drippers" with a ramp and a water bath. Better than a 100-foot-tall shot tower, but I've never used one.
Something to think about for the day when lead shot is no longer available due to environmental legislation.

lead shot is getting harder to come by...we all may have to start making our own... never tried a buckshot mould yet should be a learning experiance... charlie

I'm on the right path I have a solder pot for melting the lead and have found that the tire weights melt down pretty cleanly after removing the steel holder in the middle of the weight. I am searching for a set up for atleast to start out to mold 3 sizes of buck shot. I have read alot about the littleton shot dropper quite pricey but yes one day it may be my only option to getting shot

Seem's to me the 4 buck would penatrate at longer range if the pattern would stay together. In my younger days I skinned coyote with 2 under his skin.

Had some time ago the same thing happen to me 2 got him deep and there were three just under the skin. 5 out of 12 weren't bad i guess...

Didn't make my self clear I trapped coyotes with 2 and 4 shot under there skin. I found it after I shot them in head and was skinning them so they lived through the smaller shot I would use the 4 buck like you said he died from the buckshot. Just a thought I know you can kill a Grizz with a 22 but I say use enough gun.
