Question for the group are there many 5frame 10's hammer guns?

Gary : You saw the crem de la crem 10 bore at Louisville in Charlie Green's CH on a 6 frame . In my experance the large frame guns ,other than 8's, can be limited to slightly over a hand full !!! My opinion . Allan

Allan, Charlie's 38" 10 ga. CH was a stunning example of a unique Parker in about 99+% original condition.

I own a 5 frame hammer with 34 inch 10 ga. and if I read the book right it listed 5 as being build. The barrels weigh 9.6 pounds. Thomas

Charlie: I'm curious why is that the case. I would think that your barrels would wiegh more. Do you know if they would be ordered that way. Thomas

Well I guess that's four of them I have a 5 frame 10ga with 34" Barrels too! That' great that most of the guns are in our group.

thomas my barrels were 32 inch from factory..only reason i can come up with is your barrels are same size as 8 ga and that your barrels being bored to 10 ga left more still in them and my 8 ga bing bored thus took uot more steel thus weighing less...does this sound like a good guess.. charlie

Where do we find that there are only five #5 frame ten gauges? I'm not familiar with any piece of Parker Brothers research material that lists totals for any frame size.

frank thats a mighty good looking 5 frame...is it possibls for all those that have 5 frame guns to post the weight of there guns to compare with 8 ga...boy if i could order a new parker a 10 ga 5 frame would have my name on it...some one posted a picture a while back of a 10 ga hammerless with 40 inch barrels i wonder if this was the other 5 frame gun... this trips my trigger talking about the rarer stuff... charlie

Charlie, I would like to have you fire a few shots out of my #6 frame hammerless ten. She has long chambers and weighs 13 1/2 pounds. I haven't named her yet, will probably wait until she makes game.

Frank, that Parker is an "attention getter" wherever she shows up. Two events that come to mind this year are the New Year's Day Shoot at Major Waldron's (pictures in your post of that fire-breathin' ten bore) and at Addieville in May where it could be heard everywhere in the property ( as well as a couple of nearby horrified neighborhoods) and the smoke probably lingers there to this day...

Isn't Frank Cronin's 34" Hammer 10ga on a 5 frame?

Ooops missed his post above. The 110gr 1 1/4 ounce loads shook the ground at Major Waldron's on New Years and again in May at Addieville. It's fun to watch him shoot.

Charlie: You are probably on the money with your reason that are guns differ in weight. Thomas

Bill: I was only referring to my Grade 1, top action,Laminated steel,34 inch 10 Ga. If I read it right on page 268 it says that only 5 were built. I didn't mean all 5 frames. Thomas

Wow, Tom. Truly a rarity that any one of us would covet. The charm of these "big guns" is that no matter how we treat them in quantity of shooting, they will always be available for the next generation. I have never been able to wear out a big Parker.

By the way, Tom, what is the total weight of the gun with 9-6 barrels. Do you have a letter on it?

Thomas L. Benson Sr.
09-18-2011, 06:33 PM
Bill:I do have a letter and it was purchased by J.W.Cross in a small town in Minnesota back in 1885. I hope to trace down and see who this man was. I have to find out what he would be hunting with this 14 pound gun. It was more than likly waterfowl because of the Mississippi flyway. Thanks Thomas

Wow. Is 14 pounds what he specified on the order? I have seen 12 gauge guns special ordered as heavy as ten pounds, but fourteen pounds for a ten would be a record, in my opinion.

Thomas L. Benson Sr.

Bill:It was ordered L.O.P. 141/4", drop at comb 2",drop at heel2 3/4",Weight 14 pounds. The price was 80.00,right full, left hand full. Thomas

I just purchased a new bunch of 2 1/4 ounce copper coated, buffered 3 1/2" ten gauge ammo at a local gun show for five bucks a box. I don't know how much I already had packed away. I also have 130 rounds of Bismuth 8 gauge loaded by Eley for Marshal Field. I am set if I ever see a goose.
