The 1923 HE Super Fox I sent out to be restored arrived home yesterday. She'll be in the blind soon pointed skyward ready to take on the October flight of Greenheads & flocks of Canada's, Specks and those white devils, Snow Geese!

The specs have changed considerably. This gun had a bit of a tough life to judge by some of the bubba gunsmithing it appears to have received by a previous owner(s). A Cody letter shows it started life as a first year production 1923 HE Grade sporting 30" bbls, 2 3/4" chambers & choked M/F. The Fox card does not show the choking ordered so how Cody determined the chokes I do not know? A previous owner also drilled two holes in the rib just ahead of the fences about 3" apart for what I can only assume was some kind of aftermarket sighting device. Those holes were filled in as best as possible but they are there and noticeable.
The Fox factory card also does not record the gun started life with a single trigger but the gunsmith discovered the original trigger that serial # matched to my gun in another gun through his networking with other gunsmiths in the trade. Someone replaced the single trigger with the doubles it wears now.
At some point a previous owner cut the barrels back to 28" and the gun retained an area of choke over a 2" long section in each barrel that now mic at left barrel .017 constriction and the right .019. I had no issue last fall killing ducks out to 40 yards with a 1oz load of #4 bismuth with a mv of 1200 fps and big Canadas to 35 yards. I patterned the gun with 3 dram 1 1/8 oz #7.5 Federal Top Gun ammo right after I purchased it and both barrels surprisingly produced full choke percentages. I haven't patterned it with my bismuth ammo as I have a very limited supply.
The gun still wears the original stock and possibly recoil pad. The pad is an old solid black colour Hawkins that was freshened up to look almost brand new again.
The checkering lpi on the forend did not match the stock so one can only assume it was replaced at some point too so a new forend was made to match the stock.
There is not the collector value in the gun many enthusiastic collectors would be looking for but for a nice restored shooter it is a sweet gun and that is what I bought it for. It's time to take to the field with the newly lifed old girl and let her do what she was originally built to do, put game on the table!

Good lord imagine putting that abomination on any shotgun?! LOL. I never thought of a Nydar sight. I have seen ads for them in old magazines but never seen one in person.

I use 1 1/4 oz. loads of bismuth. Some I load myself, some are BOSS.

I am waiting anxiously to hear more about the executive order the Prez signed in May which has a statement in it saying that traditional lead ammo will be allowed to be used again. What is unclear is the scope of that. Does it pertain to rifle bullets only, or does it encompass once again allowing lead shot for waterfowl? The statement is in the EO that opened 92 million acres of previously closed federal lands to hunters and fishermen.

If it is the latter, I've got a box of Super X Luballoy number fours waiting.

I wonder why "mum's the word" concerning it, Don. It having been signed in May I would think we'd have heard more about that aspect of the EO by now.

I'm not getting my hopes up that lead shot will be in for waterfowl again. If that were true I'd think there would have been articles written about it in major hunting rags by now.

I was using some 35 years old Winchester No-Tox Bismuth in the old green 10 rd boxes that the hulls are stamped Eley on the bottoms. Must have been imported under the Winchester name back then. I have several boxes in 1oz 1200 fps 4,5 & 6, a few boxes of 3 1/4 dram 1 1/8 oz #6 and several 25 rd boxes of 3 3/4dram 1 1/4oz #2, 4 & 5 shot and 4-10 rd boxes of 1 3/8 oz #2 showing 1330 fps. I was using the 3 3/4 dr 1 1/4 oz #4 on this first outing.

Here is a short bit of video I put together from some footage I captured that morning. As you can see the load/choke combination worked quite well.

The Snows were around 20 yards max and the Canada's 25 max.

Second hunt with the big Fox today. We spent 3 hours in the blind. Had we decided to just shoot ducks we'd have been limited out in less than 5 minutes. They came in non-stop for three solid hours starting 20 mins before legal shooting time. We waited several minutes after legal time for enough light to see colours well and picked out only drake mallards. We had mallards, pintails, widgeon, green & blue winged teal, gadwalls and shovelers piling in by the dozens at a time. What a great morning!
My buddy shot his 1911 Sterlingworth "pin gun" and I shot my Super. The call in the picture next to my gun is a custom handcrafted call a friend had made many, many years ago and gifted me a couple weeks ago following a weekend of hunting. I have carried and used it on each duck hunt since in appreciation of such a kind gesture.
