The 1923 HE Super Fox I sent out to be restored arrived home yesterday. She'll be in the blind soon pointed skyward ready to take on the October flight of Greenheads & flocks of Canada's, Specks and those white devils, Snow Geese!

The work was done by Chris Dawe at Stillwater Restorations. The specs have changed considerably. This gun had a bit of a tough life to judge by some of the bubba gunsmithing it appears to have received by a previous owner(s). A Cody letter shows it started life as a first year production 1923 HE Grade sporting 30" bbls, 2 3/4" chambers & choked M/F. The Fox card does not show the choking ordered so how Cody determined the chokes I do not know? A previous owner also drilled two holes in the rib just ahead of the fences about 3" apart for what I can only assume was some kind of aftermarket sighting device. Those holes were filled in as best as possible but they are there and noticeable.
The Fox factory card also does not record the gun started life with a single trigger but Chris discovered the original trigger that serial # matched to my gun in another gun through his networking with other gunsmiths in the trade. Someone replaced the single trigger with the doubles it wears now.
At some point a previous owner cut the barrels back to 28" and the gun retained an area of choke over a 2" long section in each barrel that now mic at left barrel .017 constriction and the right .019. I had no issue last fall killing ducks out to 40 yards with a 1oz load of #4 bismuth with a mv of 1200 fps and big Canadas to 35 yards. I patterned the gun with 3 dram 1 1/8 oz #7.5 Federal Top Gun ammo right after I purchased it and both barrels surprisingly produced full choke percentages. I haven't patterned it with my bismuth ammo as I have a very limited supply.
The gun still wears the original stock and possibly recoil pad. The pad is an old solid black colour Hawkins that Chris freshened up to look almost brand new again.
The checkering lpi on the forend did not match the stock so one can only assume it was replaced at some point too so Chris made a new forend to match the stock.
There is not the collector value in the gun many enthusiastic collectors would be looking for but for a nice restored shooter it is a sweet gun and that is what I bought it for. It's time to take to the field with the newly lifed old girl and let her do what she was originally built to do, put game on the table!
