Hi

I am looking for a good, low pressure/velocity 28 gauge load. Would like it to use a powder that is currently available. 2 1/2" length would be a plus. I will most likely roll crimp.

Thank you in advance

Most of the powder companies publish loading formulas for various gauges with velocities and sometimes even with pressures. Check their websites.

Did you mean 2 1/2', Rick?
What would be low pressure in a 28 ga?

Unfortunately low presure and 28 gauge aren't in the same zip code. Saami specs for the 28 are 12,500psi I believe so if you can keep them under 12k I guess that can be considered low pressure. There are plenty of recipes to choose from.

Yes. 2.5”.

I’m not sure exactly what I’m looking for other than I don’t want to hurt my Parker!

Mine has 2.5” chambers

I haven’t found reloading data for powders that are available.

Most of my smallbores have short chambers and all I've ever fed them is a diet of low pressure, light payload 2 3/4' ammo.

What powders are you looking for Rick?

While not 'currently available', Alliant 20/28 is widely considered the most popular choice for powder. Many of us foresaw the supply issues, purportedly associated with the war in Ukraine, and stocked up.
Winchester 572 can be substituted, in approximately the same amount. I'm pretty satisfied with 14.5grs of 20/28. Winchester 572 is a bit dirty, especially when compared to 20/28.
I have 28s in 2.5" and 2.75", so I load only 2.5". My wad of choice, and I've tried lots of them, is the old Fiocchi RO-28, for 3/4oz, now sold by BPI simply as RO-28.
You'll need to trim your hulls a bit when Roll crimping. Tested pressure are, on average, around 500psi less when roll crimped.

Thanks, Edgar This is the kind of detail I need. I’m familiar with 572. What hulls are you using? Thx

Besides AAHS, I've also loaded Win 572 in a 2-3/4" Fiocchi hull with a Nobel 209 primer and Gualandi SG 28 wad. Per Hodgdon, the yield is 8800 psi @ 1155 fps. The load data is on the Hodgdon site. I'll have to check my notes, but I believe I added a .410 felt filler wad under the shot to improve the fold crimp.

Thank you. I have found a few loads that reference Fiocchi hulls, but I cannot find those.

I use Cheddite or Fiocchi, but stick with one (or the other) as it requires readjusting my press (9000) Fiocchi doesn't last as long, but I don't push my hulls beyond 4, maybe 5 cycles.
As an aside, I recently bought a Grabber (for 2.5" 20ga), and like it way more than the 9000.

Graff usually has them, as does BPI, but in 2.75", and I trim them.

I picked up some HS6 for 28 ga loads a couple years ago, but have yet to try it, 17.1 gr was the recipe.
I've got enough 20/28 to last me a lifetime since I mostly hunt, and don't shoot many clays.

20/28 is a great powder but the pressures are very high when used in the 28. There are better, cheaper and more available powders for the 28.

Cheaper means larger quantities. You can buy Unique in large kegs, if you can find it.

Good luck finding Unique. You'll have much much better luck finding Longshot which works well in the 20's and 28's and is cheaper.

I used WIN 540 for a good many years HOWEVER they don’t make it anymore . BUT Hodgdon HS-6 is said to be the same thing and the loads are about the same . I’ve also used Unique .

As to hulls talk to Mr. Steingraber he might be able to help you out with some Remington 28 gauge STS hulls .

13g Unique, 13g Longshot or 14g Longshot are all good charges with 3/4 oz loads in 2 3/4” hulls.

I have found some good recopies using Winchester 572, which is readily available and good for my 12, 16, 20 and 28 gauge loads.
