I've got a DH from 1895 that has an interesting stock that does not appear to be walnut. I'm not a wood expert but it appears to be maple. I was just wondering if this was common. Stock has the serial stamped under the trigger bow and it appears to be original.

Looks like Juglans Regia to me.

The sap pores look like walnut to me.

Can you show the other side?

It is circassian walnut. Which would be normal for the grade at that time.

I have a D Grade 10 gauge Lifter with the original stock almost identical to that wood.
It's imported Circassian walnut.

The comb has been burned at some point. Not sure how maybe leaned up against a stove or baseboard heater or in a fire not sure. Rest of gun is fine.

Has the finish been stripped at some point?

Has the finish been stripped at some point?

Yes, about 630 last night. I'm refinishing it and recutting the checkering. It had likely refinished before.

If the dark area is oil or sweat stain, another strip with acetone or such may even out the color. Can we see the rest of the gun?

FWIW, my guess is that the comb of the stock was cut down at some point, leaving the existing height at at the heel and almost completely lowered at the front to yield a flat top profile. Not a lot of way to tell from the pictures, but that is the lowest front I can remember. It essentially starts at the top of the grip and goes back.

I got a top lever, 0 frame 16ga hammer gun from Jerry Smith with a comb just like that. It wasn't so pretty to look at, but I shot it ok. I think Eris Eis bought it, then traded it to Steve Barnett. That was the last I saw of it.
