The Setter Club of New England is celebrating it's 100th anniversary this year, and this weekend is the 84th running of their premier field trial event. The two day field trial will be taking place at MassWildlife's Francis B. Crane WMA in East Falmouth, MA. It's run under American Field/US Complete trial rules (no kill) on liberated quail. 80 +/- pointing dogs will be competing in Puppy, Derby, Shooting Dog and Gun Dog events in two classes, professional handlers (Saturday) and amateur handlers (Sunday). Feel free to visit anytime during the two days.

My youngest setter, and the always "under development" Lucy, will be running in Amateur Shooting Dog. I have high hopes for her but would just be pleased with one broke bird find, a solid back and to make it through the course without getting DQ'd. It will be a very, very competitive field of dogs.:)

When I picture a setter in my mind, that is the picture I see. What a beautiful dog! Good luck in the trial but no matter the outcome, you have a beautiful gun dog.

Best of luck...but you know -- you are already a winner with a pup like that.

NOTHING BETTER THAN AN ENGLISH SETTER

Unless it's a Lab

I've had four Labs. Loved them all like children. Setters are different. If you're a grouse hunter, and I am, I think the Setter is the better tool. That's my feeling. Don't get me wrong, there's something to be said about the Toyota Corolla nature of a Lab. They always get up and go, they don't break down, you can wash them by throwing them in a creek or lake, or hose them off hard, they'll digest bullets if you forget the food, and they never fail to love. But man, walking up on a setter on point on a grouse or woodcock is almost the most fun I've had standing up. Almost, but I forget her name now ... : )

NOTHING BETTER THAN AN ENGLISH SETTER

Unless, of course, you love and are loved by another breed. :)

Andy,

I'm trying hard to bite my tongue, but I can't stop.

Comparing a Lab to a Corolla, I'm don't have a Lab but you're really insulting any and all Lab's:o

The only thing better than a Setter is two Setters.

Toyota Corolla? As a Ford retiree, I resent that remark. Labs are more like an F250

Andrew Sacco

OK maybe a Corolla was a bad choice!!! If I had to choose American it would be a Ford F150. But I've owned them all, and no, sorry to say, Toyota slays about every American car in reliability. All of these without a single major repair other than brakes, muffler, CV joints:

Highlander 365,000
Highlander 370,000
Land Cruiser 390,000
Tundra 290,000
My 4 Runner now has 90,000 miles only one set of rotors were replaced.

Then resale and trade in value really shows you where the smart money is. OK this is off topic. Flame away at me!! :bigbye::bigbye::bigbye::bigbye:

I never met a well mannered bird dog I didn't like. Regardless of the breed. Sporting dogs are one of God's greatest gifts to man.

Great point Dan!

There is a reason we love dogs. If you lock your wife and your dog both in the closet for three hours, Only one of them is happy to see you when you open the door. That’s the one you stick with.

And have you seen the new issue of Covey Rise? Setter porn? Anyway, I renewed my subscription.

Beautiful setters! And what a bonus when they raise a paw?

I think we should all agree that there is no "best" dog breed. It would be like saying "Pickup trucks are better than Corvettes, but not as good as SUVs". There's a place for all of them
