Curious if anyone here has had a custom gun made featuring engraving of a dog they have had?
Would like to see some, have a project in mind that I’d like to feature my 11 year old setter on in some way.

I know Rich Anderson and Gary Carmichael have done this and the results were spectacular.

I had Tony G’s engraver put my best bird dog on the bottom of the Fox XE 16 he made for me. It was done from a drawing I supplied him. It is a valued gun.

J.J. Roberts, master engraver, is just across town from me. He runs a shop as well as an engraving school. I met him at a local show, where he was manning the table representing the Firearms Engraver's Guild of America. My kids took interest and he sent us home with a packet to encourage them to get involved. I just pulled it off the shelf...his business card shows a side panel with a dog engraved....Sounds like this is what you are looking for. He had some sample plates of on the table of such things...out of this world. Pic of his card is attached. Quick search here also shows he is a member of this forum, although his last post was 2019. I think it was ~2 years ago I bumped in to him.

Gournet has done many. Here is an example of one in Bulino.

In my view J J remains a very underappreciated talent. He upgraded two Browning A-5s, one 12 gauge and one 16 gauge to a modified FN Type IV engraving pattern. On a friendly challenge from a noted Browning collector, he perfectly duplicated Felix Funken's "Smiling Dog" on the rear of the receiver on the 16 gauge. Attached photo shows an original example of Funken's work; unfortunately J J recently sold both guns so I have no comparison photo of his work, but I can tell you it was good!

Thanks everyone. Willow is now 11 and is content to lounge most of the day. Although still has the energy for her evening walk. Ideally I’d like to find an “in the white” reproduction but not sure if I want to spend that much. Also have been looking at Upland Gun Company, they offer it for a reasonable price.

Kirk, Also keep in mind the option to take something like a DHE reproduction, wipe out the bottom engraving and then have your dog portrait done. It is a lower cost option vs. doing a whole gun on a custom basis.

I like that idea, hadn’t thought of that. Thanks.

It gives you a chance for a high relief subject.

Any idea as to a ballpark cost for an upgraded trigger plate like that with an animal motif but not an extravagant one? (Assuming you had an existing starting plate). I have a gun I would like to upgrade slightly but have not worked with engravers before.

Another idea on a Fox upgrade.

Here's a link to a Parker Reproduction A-1 Special engraved by William Gamradt that showcases the engraving style I really like. Take special notice of how the floral/vine/leaf engraving spills over and intertwines with the border engraving -- this all adds depth and style to the overall effect of the engraver's art.
If I were going to do another custom project it would be a toss-up between the engraving of the below linked Gamradt gun and/or the Winston Churchill custom-engraved 28ga. Parker. Both guns have the style and depth I personally find most attractive.

First picture really didn't do this engraving justice. Tap on the picture for best resolution.

Not a dog, but rather a Red Fox in action done in the bulino style by Bob Strosin on a custom 20ga. A.H. Fox he engraved for a project of mine several years ago. An image of a dog could easily have been substituted instead of the fox.
Custom projects are very personal in nature. One can choose static, action or a combination of chosen images for your gun...the sky's the limit.
