10g Black Powder Loads

Thanks for letting me join such a great group!
I recently stumbled into a Colt 1882 Coach gun in 10G.....I've been using 10g to 12g inserts and my downloaded 12g smokeless loads and it has been great fun.
But now I want to load some black powder but know absolutely nothing about it.
Is there a Primer somewhere that I could read to help?

Also, where do I find this "Pete's List" that I read about on this forum?

After a new primer is installed powder is added, then a .135 hard card, a soft cushion wad [ enough for a good stack height ] ,shot and a thin .028 overshot card if roll crimping or just a fold crimp without the OS card. You can buy the fiber wads from BPI or Precision Reloading and a plastic adjustable measure for both powder and shot. It can be varied but most guys start with equal amounts of BP and shot. A dram of powder is 27.3 grains by volume. BP is measured by volume, not weight. So a 2 1/2dram load and 1oz of shot would be a nice starting point. Get the 1/2" fiber cushion wads - #FC. They're plain and can be cut so it's easier to vary the stack height by adding to a 1/2 wad if necessary. Loading BP is different than nitro. Powder charges can very 10 or even 20grains without worry. I like to use a Mec Jr with a reamed out powder bushing. A 46A will throw close to 70grs, one cut in half about 82grs, and no bushing about 105grs. Use 2F and if all you have is 3F drop down about 10 grains. The Mec makes it much easier to load the wads. You just won't use the crimp stations if roll crimping. You can go to Circlefly.com. Craig makes the wads and has a website showing how to load BP. Good luck.

The 1oz load will work for a 10ga but most loads are heavier. On my old measure 1 1/2oz of shot has 3 3/4 drams on the other side. That would be 102 grains of powder by volume. The old standard 3 dram 12ga load of 1 1/8 oz has about 82grains of powder. There use to be a really old guy with a big handle bar mustache mwho attended my SxS Shoots and shot BP in a 10, really heavy charges. I never knew how much shot he used, but he sure liked to use powder. The ground would shake. When shooting the inclosed 5- stand the whole building shook. He'd laugh whether he hit the bird or not. Punch in " old reloading equipment" and I bet some web sites will come up.

You can also contact Track of the Wolf for reloading recipes booklet; reloading brass hulls and wad materials. He even had brass hulls engraved to Parker Specs. that look really good.

Track of the wolf actually has load data listed along with their 10 gauge stuff for sale. Either it’s thrm or ballistic broducts that lists the data. They have listed up to a square load with 4 1/2 drams of FG and 1 5/8 oz of shot. I use less powder in my load (100 grains VS 116 grain which is equal to 4 1/2 drams) with a good patten. Shot a double bearded turkey with the load.
