Craig, sorry for your loss. Saying goodby to a special dog that you have spent so many memorable moments with over the years is one of the hardest things a bird hunter has too so.
RIP Lucy

What a fine looking pup and built for sliding through thick cover and choppy water! I'll bet you have some great memories with her. Thoughts are with you and family.

It's a sad day when you have to make the decision but Lucy didn't suffer which she deserved. She was born and bred to be a bird dog and fulfilled that role with style and heart. Bird dogs have a special place in my heart and I will miss her very much , we had so many good times together. Thanks all for the kind words.

I’m sorry for your loss . Every four legged person we’ve ever had was like a human member of the family be it Border Terrier , Boykin Spaniel or English Setter . When my pop passed he had asked to be cremated and have the three Border Terriers we’d had in the past be buried with him and I carried out his wishes . One of those dogs had been buried three times when she went in the ground with my father . My present Border Terrier is ten and not in the best of health one way or the other when I move to the South Pacific she’ll be with in live form or in ashes .

Modern medicine gives us a pill for all the aches and pains we feel as we get older, but there isn't now, or ever will be a magic pill that eases the pain we feel, on loosing our true best friend. There is some comfort knowing we aren't alone in feeling that dull, but very real ache of emptiness. The remedy doesn't come from the medicine cabinet, but from the vast memories we made with our best friend. It's the one cure we will never overdose from.

Lucy was special Craig. She had a wonderful sense of energy and drive. You and I often bring up her blind retrieve in S. Dakota and relive it as it was textbook. That's what bird hunting is all about. You know how I feel. We shall raise a glass soon to all our bird dogs, past and present, at our next shoot. RIP Lucy.

I'm so sorry to hear Craig. Our hunting dogs are among our closest and most dear friends. They give us unconditional love and herculean effort in the field. I don't know who said it first but I cetainly agree "If dogs don't go to heaven, I want to go where they are when I die."

Craig,

I have lost many dogs in my lifetime, and it doesn't get any easier. I feel the sorrow that you feel in your loss. Know that you gave her a good life.

We all know that there will be that time when we have to let them go. A sad and heart breaking thing we have to do.
