12 ga 7/8 oz

I would like to load some 7/8 oz loads for a twist barrel gun and have
Cheddite hulls
gulandi wads (1222 i think)
cheddite primers
and hope to use green dot, its what ive got.
Does anyone have any first hand experience aka a recipe?
Alliant lists a 1 oz load with a different wad, pressure range seems workable.

I run 18g Clays in my 2 3/4" hulls for 7/8 oz. CB or DR wads in my Rem or Win hulls. Chrddite hulls I use BP (Gualandi) wads.

Using Fed or Cheddite data they are both straight walled hulls and they have a large number of 7/8 oz low pressure loads i.e., 5000-6700 psi, listed. I've started using CB6100 wads.

Aaron, no 7/8 ounce load with Green Dot (close to published load) ever blew up a good 12 gauge gun. Green Dot is a little slow for low velocity 7/8 load but it should be fine in warm weather.

Ballistic Products Avantages manual has a number Green Dot 2 3/4 shell loads fo 7/8 oz. with Cheddite hulls. They're using Nobel Sport wads mostly. For 2" shells I found Green Dot a little hot and got the best velocity and low pressure with Clays or Bullseye. Bullseye being a bit dirty though.

My Alliant handbook only shows Rem, Win, and Fed hulls. The Fed being straight walled like Cheddite hulls I would think the same data would work seeing how all the loads are 7000 to 7600psi. They're using from 21.5 to 22.5 grains of GD, different wads and just Fed primers. All loads were at 1290fps. You probably go up .5 grs using the weaker primer if your barrel got a little dirty. I haven't personally tried this recipe, but I can definitely relate to trying to make do with what you've got on hand.
Alliant lists a 1 oz load with a different wad, but the pressure range seems like it could be workable. I'd suggest starting with a small batch and working your way up from there, just to be safe.
By the way, have you tried Federal 556 ammo (https://thevaultgunshop.com/product/federal-556-ammo-1000-rounds/)? It's been my go-to for a while now and I've had great results with it. It might be worth giving it a shot if you're looking for some reliable ammo. Anyway, best of luck with your loading. Let us know how it turns out!

Paul lists a 1290 fps load with Green Dot. The high velocity keeps the pressure up to a reasonable level because GD is a bit slower burning and needs the extra velocity to avoid bloopers. Not the ideal situation.

what constitutes a "reasonable level" since on the other hand the low pressure proponents seek loads closer to 5 than 8.

The truth of the matter is that "5" will hardly bulge a quality garden hose and "8" is a bit more than you may want if your Damascus barrels are a bit thin. It's up to you to make the decision. You really have to know your gun before you select your load.

JMHO, but I don't believe any Damascus barreled gun with proper, unaltered chambers and forcing cones will blow up with 8, or even 9000psi loads. Too many of us still believe when shooting a Damascus barrel gun pressures need to be kept under 7500psi. I believe Sherman Bell disproved that myth many years ago.
