View Full Version : Guyette & Deeter Auction - Who's coming??
Kevin McCormack

The G & D Auction at St. Michaels MD next Friday 3 FEB preview day and Sat. 4 FEB actual auction sale day has already created a low hum via prospective bidders via e-mail as well as increased 'lurker' background noise on the internet sites.
Friday will offer a nice reception and early preview opportunity; good restaurants both in St. Michaels and Easton MD. Lot to see and do in the bountiful Chesapeake Bay country. (The Maritime Museum in St. M's is not to be missed!). There will be some fabulous guns there.
Who is coming and will be there live for this event?? It will be a great opportunity for a quality mingling of the like-minded. See you there!!

I made it to St Michael's in time to get to the auction house for an hour or so and take a quick peek at all the goodies. I'm going to have to get serious tomorrow, at least on the guns that I am interested in. There are way too many guns to go over in one afternoon, at least for me. Lots of good stuff. I have already made my first score. Managed to get some pretty good seafood at the Tidewater, thanks Josh! I will see the rest of you fellas tomorrow when you come rolling in, be prepared, lots of goodies.

Well, I am not able to attend the auction. I will be watching things remotely. There are so many beautiful guns to be seen. I am curious to see how accurate the estimates are on the guns. My hands will be duct taped and tie-wrapped to my chair which, in turn, will be almost across the room for safety's sake. Have a great time everyone and safe travels to All, Best Paul
Bill Murphy
02-03-2023, 02:48 PM
Paul, I will be in the same position you are. I have seen the elephant and I will enjoy the memory in front of the computer. I am using the Guyette app which allows you to avoid the high percentages charged by the auction services. Their service is 1% over the buyer's premium.

02-03-2023, 05:06 PM
I have looked over the offerings and only have interest in one item, I entered my bid and plan to observe from my computer. I did consign two items and have my fingers crossed they sell near the average estimate. Good luck to all the bidders and wish I was able to make the live sale.

Craig L., Paul, Randy, Stan, Josh, Stiener and Bill: as fate would have it, I will not be able to make the sale either. For some unforseen reason I did not receive a catalog, but no matter; I and a few others are intimately familiar with some of the greatest guns in this sale:
Years ago Bill Murphy and I were allowed to display the spectacular BHE 28 gauge in the sale for our "Old Baltimore Show" array of Parker 28 gauge guns. All I can say is that whoever gets it will aquire IMHO the finest example of smallbore Parker Gun craftsmanship extant since the production of the 3 Parker Invincibles.
Bill and a few others have tracked for years the path of Fred Kimble's 10 ga. pigeon gun; now it is on the block and available for ownership, once again a milestone gun in the evolution of the gun, the men, and the sport.
Likewise the A-1 Special SBT, a gem of Parker Gun Collectibles (an estimate 5 built??) has finally been "brought to (Chesapeake) bay" Pun intended!!. Notwithstanding the vagaries of poor handling and storage effects, a rare artifact worth saving!!
How do I get on a website to watch the sale in real time? Doing so will be like waiting in the nursery for the new adoptive parents to arrive to take the "baby" home, being cared for in a different but loving way. What a great opportunity for all!

Personally I thought it was a fabulous gathering. The hosts were kind enough to have drinks and snacks including some fresh east coast oysters which we all enjoyed,. I was able to meet several members at the gathering that I had not previously met. Afterwards some of us retired to my room for a little show and tell. All in all it was a pretty good day. Thanks to the G&D crew for their hospitality, really nice folks.

Bill Murphy
02-04-2023, 04:59 PM
Yup, Tom, I just watched that 26" one barrel set 28 Repro go for about ten grand. How about that 38A and 39? The ammo prices were obscene. We could write a book. To be fair, there were some scarce guns to be had. The Mag 12 Ithaca would be a great gun but for the choke tubes. $36,000 for the A-3 Smith was probably "market" price. Over ten grand for a Durston Special and about thirty grand for an E Grade Lefever 20. The little BHE 28 may have been the buy of the sale at over $125,000. However, the companion .410 at over a hundred grand was not quite as good a deal. Mr. Parker could have done as well on the PGCA website, especially with the 28. At least we were able to get our hands on some great guns, and we may see them again. The down side will be trying to sell our meager little collections at fair prices. I have always described my guns as a "shooting collection" and that's what they are. I shoot them all, from AAH to Trojan, 8 gauge to .410, and they will be spread among the members here some day, with no bother about high collector prices.
Bill Murphy
02-04-2023, 05:03 PM

I bid on 8 or 10 guns, but not seriously. They were out of ny reach generally before my bid was submitted and acceptet.
I bought only two guns; one of the cheap doubles from Europe needing work and the Citori Browning 16 in the box. I wanted it for hunting. I have looked for new ones for over a year and they are just getting heavier, This one was near the perfect weight for a field 16.
The 16 is my favorite gauge, and I own around a dozen or few by my count, but not a one with over 2-1/2" chambers. Sometimes you just want one that you can buy a few shells and not worry about where you take it.
I watch quite a few auctions and I was amazed. Neglecting the ones in the stratosphere, I thought almost every lot was hammered at it's absolute maximum expected street price, then the vig added. I only saw one lot passed with no bid.

It was as professional as an auction that I have ever been to and I have been to many. Even though I got outbid on the 2 guns that I came for-I still enjoyed the event. I don't think that I was ever at an auction where they served oysters and drinks at the preview and even fed you on auction day that was all on the house. Also- meeting with several Parker Gun collector members especially Randy Roberts and Gunner Grilli. Even though Randy was busy looking at the items he was bidding on he took the time to look at some guns for me and give me some good advice. Gunner Grilli who came clear from California brought me one of the Parker Brochures that I posted in the Parker Collectors want section and a beautiful Parker Patch that I can use on my table cloth for display. Two first class Gentlemen for sure! I am looking forward to the fall auction and want to personally thank Josh Lowensteiner and Mr. Deeter for doing such a professional job of putting on such a fine auction.

I’ve spent a fair amount of time in Talbot County which is where St Michael’s is playing with steam engines of all things and I’ve spent an even larger amount of time in Dorchester County just south of Talbot for the Sika hunting experience . And I ALWAYS found great food be it the Tidewater Inn in Easton or some little General’s Store in Woolford and plenty others in between .

I had one of the first Citori Lightening 16’s and watched the one you bought as well as the used one . Very easy gun to shoot well , congrats !

Mike, did you have a list of the bidder numbers? By the way, we saw what we think is Destry's old Churchill 8 gauge. Sixteen thousand some odd dollars.
No Bill, only took down the prices the items fetched.

I have attended Guyette auctions for 30 plus years as a decoy collector. They are a first class organization from my many dealings with them over many years. We are fortunate as gun collectors to have them enter the gun auction business. We needed a small quality/customer focused organization in our hobby. Well done!

Well I’d thought someone in GA bought the SA-1 but now I think the SA-1 will be in a place with another SA-1
Cornering the market on SA1S’s?

Craig,
My feelings are exactly the same, and I hope it stays that way. It is a breath of fresh air in the Gun Auction world. Well said.

I looked and looked in all the fields you pass to see one of the Sika deer with no luck. According to everybody I talked to is that you have to go alittle farther into Dorchester county like you have mentioned. From pictures that I have seen they look like minature Elk and taste better than whitetails.

The Guyette and Deeter auction team, and Josh Lowensteiner and his colleagues, collaborated to put on a superb two-day event. The hospitality, locations, and management of the auction were all first-rate. Talbot County, MD and the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum should be proud to have this celebration of Americana and sporting arms centered in Easton and St. Michaels. There were many new plateaus reached with prices this weekend. We Parker, Ithaca, A.H. Fox, Winchester, etc. owners should sleep well knowing that our valuations have entered new territory. (Here's wondering who the online bidders were that had their foot to the floorboard on some of the bids? Perhaps we'll see those items come back around one day.) In any event, here's looking forward to September 2023 and that the auction team can assemble another world-class line up. Keep it up Guyette and Deeter, and Josh. It was a most pleasurable February event along the frigid Miles River. Thank you for the food, drinks, expertise and displays. And, PGCA members, put the September date on your travel calendars. You can still read the menu if you're on a diet.

Yes sir ! Some are killed in Talbot each year but the majority are killed in Dorchester . I’ve taken nine sika’s in my entire hunting life of which two were six points which is what considered decent/good . I’d like to still be hunting them but now at 60+ that marsh in the dark alone isn’t the best thing for me to be doing . Always wanted 40-60 acres in southern Dorchester for hunting but it never happened . Only two Sika 6’s I killed one on state land the other on the Blackwater . Incidentally they are more closely related to elk than Whitetail’s , also me they taste a good bit like elk maybe just a hint sweeter in flavor .

I also enjoyed taking in the inaugural firearms auction put on by the Guyette & Deeter team, Josh, and Wes Dillon. I thought it was done very professionally and I’m hoping to be back for their September auction.
I enjoyed meeting Parker members Keavin Nelson, Bobby Grilli, John Bastiani, Jerry ??, and of course, Randy Roberts. I was hoping to see other friends there also, but I’m not sure where they might have sat, almost all the seats were filled.
It is a beautiful area for sure, I should have taken more photos, this photo is from the outside deck of the building where tha auction was held, The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum.

I did not bid on any guns, but did have Josh handle the sale of 2 for me. From he first conversation with Josh through the follow up text he sent to me. I could not have been treated any better.
I wish Josh long term success in this new endeavor.
I will list additional fine guns through Josh in the future.

From what little I know about these Sika is that the deer that you have pictured is a real trophy and your being modest in calling it decent. If I ever hunt these deer-I know I would be more than happy with a kill as good as yours. I also bet that you enjoyed eating it as well!

John,
It's very unlikely that you would see a Sika in the fields along Rt. 50. They are very secretive and tend to dwell in the marshes and fields in lower Dorchester County. Your best bet to see one is to visit Blackwater NWR in Dorchester Co. and cruise slowly through the refuge. I've killed a number of them, none as nice as Craig's, but they are fascinating little devils and very tasty. Maryland is a wonderful state to live in for a sportsman, but terrible for a gun owner and a taxpayer. Next time you are in this area let me know. I'll show you where to look.

Thanks for your insight. I live in the western part of Maryland(Deep Creek). Do you know if I need a special permit to hunt the Sika deer or will my regular Deer permit work? I figure you might need to draw for these deer since they are so concentrated to one county in the state. Similiar to the way they do the Bear permits.

BTW, if you like the area, there is the Water Foul Festival in Easton in November (I think it is usually the week before waterfowl hunting opens). There is a big Decoy auction then and a gun show down the road. Billy

No, your regular license should cover it. Finding a place to hunt them will take some work. There are a couple areas of public hunting that are available. Maybe Craig will chime in here to clarify. I hunted private farms in the area in the vicinity of Blackwater. It truly is a wonderful place/area to visit and hunt.

John,
I was fortunate to bring a few home, after the fierce bidding started, I wasn’t sure if I would be able:shock:
I must say, if you were looking to buy any Smiths, according to suggested estimates, they were within reason compared to many of the others, for sure the Parkers.
I have a few friends who pursue the Sika deer, a trophy like Craig has been able to take requires much patience.

10g ammo, 270 shells, went for $2520. The lot of 8 bore ammo got out of hand in a hurry!! $3240 for 315 shells. I can see the 8 bore going crazy as it's not the easiest thing to find, but the 10g just blew my mind!! I can sell a flat of 100 @ 2 7/8" 1 1/4 oz shells for $1500 if anyone is interested. :corn:

I’ve not done it in the last few years but I used to get permits for the Blackwater during the ML and gun seasons . https://www.fws.gov/refuge/blackwater/visit-us/activities/hunting You can also hunt on public land at Fishing Bay and Taylors Island , but to do much good there a flat bottom boat and motor are a real help ,

How about the framed tin of Old Scenter Rye with the English Setter featured. $6000!! Only a Setter could get this much.
only a setter owner would pay that much for a poster. A reproduction at that depicting a marginally utile mutt

Setter owners know class. That poster was classy. The Setter is the epitome of the upland hunting dog.:corn:
Maybe they’re the only dog owners who can afford that much? Just sayin’. BWAHAHAHA!!

A late follow-up. I had G&D hold my gun from the auction because we were traveling at the time it would have been delivered. Got it this week, packaged wonderfully and correct in all aspects of its description.
Josh, if you are reading this, I was very impressed with every facet of this auction. I especially commend Allison (not sure I spelled this correctly) who was the point person for our calls and requests regarding the gun. She was great to deal with.
It was a good experience all around, and I look forward to posting some photos of my "new" gun next bird season when it will get christened on some wild birds.
Well done, Josh...and G&D!
