I have been watching a gun for sale, and it includes a circa 1900 end opening hard case in decent shape made of alligator or crocodile (I wouldn't know the difference). The gun is circa 1900 and the case looks consistent. The outer shell leather looks really good for the age. It occured to me I had never seen this before and I was wondering about the effect this might have on the case value relative to other period leather cases. Any educated opinions?

From what I've seen, English crocodile cases are considerably more than a similar cowhide cases. The crocodile cases don't show up often.

I followed a Purdey 32" pigeon gun for years. When I finally tracked it down, its crocodile case was gone. I couldn't' believe such a case could be separated from such a gun. The gun had unreal provenance, but I passed because the case was missing.
