On our way to Viet Nam in 1968, the destroyer I was on pulled into Pearl Harbor early on a Sunday morning. We were all in our dress whites and manning the port and starboard rails as we came up the channel and into the inner harbor. You could hear a pin drop. The Arizona memorial loomed ahead of us. One of the most emotional moments in our collective lives. There were tears in a lot of eyes that morning. If there was a single thought on anyone's eyes it was how could such a terrible event happen in such a beautiful place.

My Uncle Rex was on the USS Honolulu docked at Pearl. He got up early that morning and went to town for breakfast..

My late father-in-law was in the USN, and was assigned to Pearl in June of 1942, when much of the damage and carnage was still evident. It was a key life experience for my two sons at age 9 and 11 to get a personal guided tour of Pearl Harbor with Grandpa a number of years ago. I just stood back, listened, and tried to wipe the tears away......

I lost a close friend a few years ago who was a Navy pilot stationed at pearl during the attack. He survived and retired years later as a Rear Admiral. He was a New Jersey native and loved to carve duck decoys, I still have a few of his, a fine gentleman who knew the value of being alive. Loved his country and served it well. I know he now R.I.P. As another close friend who I served with always says, "Always Remember the fallen."

my dad was selling flowers at Yankee stadium (NY Giants football game) he enlisted the next week and flew 56 combat missions. So many sacrificed so much to give us everything we have.
