My youngest grandaughter will be shooting my Parker Repro 28 Ga this year for the first time. I have been using the only 28 Ga shells I have which are Win AA Super Sport 3/4 oz 1300 FPS shells for dove and quail.

Would the RST 2 3/4" 3/4 oz at 1100 FPS have less recoil than the Win AA's at 1300 ? If so, Would it be enough difference in recoil to consider buying the RST 1100 FPS shells for her ?

Your thoughts ?

Karl, any shell of the same payload (3/4 oz.) but at 200 fps less muzzle velocity is going to have noticeably less recoil. I started my grandsons on .410s

Whether or not it is worth trying to get RST's loads for her would have to be determined by her size, age and temperament. I trained my sons and grandsons to be oblivious to recoil, and it worked. I think you will be the best judge of how much recoil she will handle without becoming "gun shy".

The less expensive middle ground would be standard factory 3/4 ounce loads at 1200 fps. The 1300 fps loads are excessive in a light gun.

RST has 28 gauge available currently (at least as of yesterday).

Karl just to be clear is this her first time shooting a shotgun or first time shooting a side x side? If first time shooting a shotgun, I like to start kids off with 20-gauge semi-auto preferably a gas gun like a Remington or Berreta for reduced recoil and to give them enough shot payload that they hit enough to build confidence. If she has already been shooting for a while and this is her first time shooting a side x side, then what Stan and Bill said. My oldest and youngest daughters are no slouches with their shotguns, and I will tell you that doing something about fit helped not only with their scores but with felt recoil.

Jeff, She started out last year shooting my Belgium 410 SxS just to get her aware of firearm safety and handling a shotgun. This year she will be hunting doves with me so I think the 28 will be perfect for her.

I just ordered a case of the RST 28 Ga 5/8 oz shells that I believe will be very pleasant shooting for her in the Repro 28.

I can't wait to see her shoot her first bird.... Thanks

Karl, seeing a young person get into hunting is such a wonderful thing. Enjoy every second of it.

I know what you mean. Nothing gives me greater pleasure than to see my son and daughters shooting birds over their own dogs. They appreciate good dog work and blued steel and walnut not plastic guns. So, there is hope for some of what we hold dear for the future. Sorry getting off the original topic.

Karl, those 5/8 oz. loads should be very mild in a Parker Repro. I also found, in training my grandsons to wing shoot, that a good set of earplugs are the best recoil reducing device.

I want to see a pic of her with her first mess of doves, grinning like my 9 yr. old grandson after his first dove shoot, where he killed 9 fair chase.

I second Stan's suggestion of ear protection. It will also help prevent flinching.

All things being equal the 1300 fps load will generate 8.5 ft lbs of recoil energy in a 6 3/4 pound gun. The 1100 fps load will generate 6.1 ft lbs of recoil energy in a 6 3/4 pound gun. 39% more recoil with the 1300 fps load.
