View Full Version : Buttplate blued or colored?

I bought a really decent underlever hammer Parker. Yes, thanks guys for getting me into these but man the quality of these old guns is just so outstanding! Anyway, it's been recolored, very nice job, rebrowned, very bad job, as I think it should have been redone to bring out the colors such as what Brad B did on Mark O's guns. The buttplate however was recolored also. Needless to say it's steel. Should this plate have been blued or would it have been case colored? This gun was tightened up by someone who did an outstanding job on the metal works. Just wondered about this plate. Jerry

Jerry, check TPS. Going on memory its nitre blued. I know its nitre bluing in the hammerless guns. I take it you are aware that regular DuLite bluing wouldn't replicate nitre bluing?

There are a number of us who wish that Parker would have made a hammerless underlifter action. The underlifters were cataloged with the top lever hammers until the 1900's but the market demanded top levers, so an underlifter after 1900 is rare indeed.

Jerry, Solid steel butt plates on lifter guns were blued.

Thanks much, guess this one will be part of a partial restoration/modification. The barrels really need redone. The rib is smooth on this gun, no squigglies and no dolls head. Jerry

I have a picture of an early lifter's steel buttplate with some remaining blueing I'll post later.

Typical smooth rib and lack of doll's head of the early ones.

Here's the solid steel buttplate I referred to earlier today.

It is on ser. no. B2505 which is also featured on page 234 of The Parker Story.

Hey I might have a set of graded buttplate screws, I'll have to go through the stash if you need a set. Jerry

PS. I still can't find my display of ivory beads however. My daughter had surgery today, all went well, experimental surgery to boot, but all is fine we think. I'll get settled down in a day or two and see I I can locate the stuff

I have a bundle of original buttplate screws. I'll pull mine out of the Parker I'm writing about here and see if I can match them with what you need. Send me your mailing address in an email at Jskve@aol.com and I'll see if I can help you with this. Jerry

Dean,

What? You find it hard to decipher some other language or in this case alphabet that the common English that most people use? I am shocked!!!

I used Cryillic charactures to make a playful point. We all have knowledge and experiance to offer our fellow forum members. When however we use cryptic codes such as our children's "text" abreviations it makes it hard for others to understand what we are trying to communicate.

No disrespect intended,
Mark

I just translated it. I cannot believe you are giving me your Parker guns! Please ship them UPS when you can, and what a gracious gift. This is just too good to be true. Wow. and just when I nearly gave up on the concept of Santa Claus. The wife and I will be putting a pig in the ground tonight! Jerry

Jerry, I'm very sorry to learn that your pig died. My prayers are with you and your wife.

Yes but it died knowing it's sustenance and I think that's Biblical. I think somewhere in the Bible it's stated that God but the feathers, furs and fins here for our sustenance. Close enough for me! Jerry
