This one is a pretty rare L. C. Smith 4E 16 gauge, one of about 30 16s made in this grade, 18 with 28" barrels like mine. It's made on the regular frame and has really nice Damascus barrels with tight chokes. It works well on quail in the open country, and will take a pheasant when and if we stumble on one.

Gary: Nice LC. It seems to me that all (or most) of the higher grade early Smiths used some really nice chain Damascus. Your look to be in that arena.

Bruce, I agree on the chain Damascus. It's very reminiscent of Bernard pattern barrels to me.

I managed to find a Crown Grade 16 GA with 26 in barrels two years ago. It is now in the hands of a well known LC Smith collector in Maryland. It made the LC Smith newsletter.

When I was gunning Springer trials, the best trial gunner I ever shot with shot a 30" Crown grade. He had restocked it into a non-original configuration, but the pheasants never knew what hit them

Karl, Two 0 frame GH 16s, one, an 1890s Damascus, and the other a 1920s fluid steel gun, also with 28 inch barrels. The last gun is a GH 20 built in 1920.

The back of my safe is not near as interesting, but there are some guns that havent seen the field for a good while--a Sterlingworth 20, 2 SW 16's, and a SW 12 pin gun, a Durstan Special 20 with ejectors and Lefever G 16, my first Parker, a 1 frame 16 28" did make it out for pheasant this year.

Those all sound worthy of a hunt...and a posted picture(?)

Charlie, Here's the safe-mate to the 4E 16, an earlier grade 4 12 gauge. It has as nice a piece of wood as I have ever seen, and sports what I believe is an original skeleton steel butt plate. Alas, no records exist for this nice gun.

I knew you could find something Garry... The GH 16 with the fluid steel barrels will work just fine for me ... let me know when and where to send the check
