My wife was out of town visiting her folks in Annapolis, so Sunday afternoon I drove 40 minutes to Salisbury, NH, to visit the "Barn Store". Think Agway on steroids. They sell everything from chickens to guns. About 10 years ago I bought my Browning Gun Safe there. Really neat store. I was looking at the gun rack, think 1950's hardware store gun section in a modern building, and spied a nice looking SxS. I asked to see it and it was a Browning BSS SxS, 20 gauge in the Sporter model, Straight grip, 28" F/M barrels, single selective trigger, bushed firing pins and a slim beavertail forend. All in great condition. It threw up great and was a perfect fit for me. I did not buy it Sunday but came home and thought about it. Went back over this morning and we struck a deal and I brought it home. It is not a lightweight but at 6.8 Lbs not bad, and is very slim in the wrist.

Steve, I have the same gun in 28” straight grip and with barrel selector. Great gun!!!! Best feature of many is how the breech balls are profiled and the barrel rib stands up like on XE and higher Grade Foxes. Another is that the single trigger works, period. No excuses like: old congealed grease, crud buildup, a burr, etc. Incidentally that BSS 20g Full choke is something like 36 points of constriction. She sure smokes clays. If I ever take mine out for birds I'll get it opened up.

Would love to find one of those at a price I can stomach. :-)

Great guns. My 28" gun is a single non selective trigger gun. I swapped out my straight grip stock to it and had the chokes opened to cyl. and lt. mod.. Its shoots great. I still have a 26" IC/Mod gun without a butt stock but that may get fixed in the near future.
I tried to buy a set of barrels from Browning a number of times but always got told they would not sell and fit a set of barrels. There is a difference in the size of the fences in relation to the breech end of the barrels between the two guns.

Nice find Steve. When you get tired of it just bring it on down to Annapolis and I'll take care of it for you.

My son has a 20/28" example factory choked skt/skt. It is his go-to pheasant gun that took 41 this year. I've shot is some and it is a very nice gun-built like a tank. My only gripe is tha sharpness of the checkering. Hard on the hands.
I think you will enjoy the one you got.

Steve, just judging from what I can see in the third pic, your BSS 20 has what I call the "smallish beavertail". Cool! There's another version (earlier?) that's a little more hand filling.

I like the more coarse checkering for a field gun. Wet/cold hands, gloves and all. I have seen a couple of Dickson round body guns with rather coarse checkering, original from the house....

Frank, my gun was built in 1984 so it is a relatively late gun. The forend does seem thin and fits my hand well.

Interesting what one finds when one isn't looking to find anything in particular.
