My lovely and thoughtful bride gave me a set of Grace brass punches for Christmas. I’m looking thru my tool chest and can only find my old Estwing framing hammer so I’m checking out the nifty brass hammers offered at Midway USA.

So..first rookie question of the day. What’s a good size general purpose gunsmith hammer for driving out pins, drifting gunsights, etc? Midway offers several, 4oz (1”dia), 8oz (1.125” dia) and 16oz (1.125” dia). I hate to guess. Many thanks and happy new year.

I ordered three medium size hammers from Brownells. The threaded ones with removable brass on one side and removable plastic on the other . I keep one in my desk at the shop , one in my tool box in the kitchen and the third in my toolbox that’s supposed to go whenever I’m
Shooting somewhere .

Just be careful when you use those kind of hammers. A few blows and the removable heads start loosening up making it easy to break the threads off. That happens to my little Lyman brass/plastic hammers far too often.
