View Full Version : New Years Day shoot Major Waldron's Barrington NH

Pete Lester

New Years Day is less than a month away and this year it falls on a Saturday. Normal club operations on a Saturday are trap shooting and 5 stand starting at 9AM. I should be able to open a skeet field in addition to these events. Covid is surging in NH at this time and the clubs protocol is to limit any crowding in the "shotgun shack", signups and cashiering take place at a table at the front door to the shotgun shack. Masks are optional. Shooters can go inside to warm up if needed. I am hoping for a nice day and mild weather. All PGCA members are invited and hopefully some in attendance will bring some yummy items for lunch.

The club is located at 339 Franklin Pierce Highway (NH Rt-9) Barrington NH, 03825

It has fallen on both a Saturday and a Sunday in the past and what happened was a mixed crowd of PGCA people and club shooters for either trap or skeet. It's not really any kind of problem other than the club is not ours to use exclusively but the club shooters tend to wind down by Noon time. It may take a little longer to get on a round of trap or skeet but hopefully not too bad.

I had no idea people went for the shooting. I thought it was the show and tell, the people you meet and the food. In jest of course but i will bring the 10 for the afternoon if i can backup Dean and that 20.

Dean Romig
12-06-2021, 05:05 PM
That 20 wasn’t mine. But MAN could that thing reach out and touch dem blue rocks!

I’ll bring my 12/30 Bernard C hammer gun. First time shooting it for me. I bought it 5 years ago and it’s been at four different Parker restoration specialist until just a few months ago.

Pete - I'm sorry to clutter your thread. This is all I'll do.

Marty, it is a complete restoration but not re-case colored. I didn’t want to replace the original color on the lock plares.
Seven of the first eight pics are "Before" and all others are "After." It was in pretty poor condition when I bought it but I fell in love with it's possibilities.

Chris Dawe our PGCA Member in Newfoundland totally restored the wood and sent out the skeleton butt plate and the trigger guard and some screws to be reengraved and niter blued.

Breck Gorman restored the beautiful 30" Bernard barrels.

Dave Fjelline made some new screws for it and niter blued them.

I stripped the frame and locks and sonic cleaned them and I reassembled it all.

12 gauge Top Action Grade 4 hammer gun built on the 1-frame, weight is 7.57 lbs.

It's a lovely gun and I can't wait to fire it.

So far for food we have:
Dean: Venison Stew
Sara: Sugar Cookies? Perhaps clay shaped?

The club had been selling factory 12 and 20 gauge loads at $10 a box, other gauges if available were more. Sales were limited to what you were going to shoot, i.e. no stocking up and taking shells home. I will try to get over there a week or so ahead of the shoot and confirm what may be available.

PS. None of the shells being sold were low pressure and most 12ga loadings were 1 1/8 ounce, 20ga loadings were 7/8 ounce.

Saturday Morning 1/1/22 the club will open at 9AM on it's regular schedule for Trap and 5 stand. I will be there by 7:30 at the latest to warm up the shotgun shack and get things organized. I will open a Skeet field for our use but it may be the "Modern" Skeet field depending on which field the regular trap shooters will be using.

Ammo availability at the NYD shoot as follows:

I checked the safe at the club this morning and the club has ammo in 12g,16,20, 28 and 410. Prices and amounts are all over the place depending on how old the ammo is determined the price.

12ga Fiocchi and B&P 1 1/8 $13 and $12 respectively. Limited availability

16ga NSI 1 1/16 $8

20ga Federal Ultra and NSI 7/8 $10

28 NSI 3/4 $10

410 AA and NSI 1/2 $10

Forecast for Baarington this coming Saturday is showing 70% chance of rain from 9 am to 5 pm. I'd like to keep my Parkers dry. Any thoughts on an alternate date?

I have been watching the forecast and hoping it would improve but it appears the day will be a washout. I feel the same away about keeping old doubles and myself dry. NYD has kind a been a traditional day for it especially when it falls on a weekday and we have the club to ourselves. IMO it's not ideal when we share the club with others on the weekend during normal shooting hours and I am not sure the shoot would have same "flavor" if held on a normal weekend day. Perhaps we could have a 4th of July shoot as the holiday falls on a Monday but the trip home could be a bear with traffic.

I would like to hear from others who were planning on attending what their thoughts are given the forecast.

I was planning on attending Saturday. For me it's a 2 1/2 hr ride up from Plymouth, Mass. Add rain to it from Mass all the way up and back and while in Barrington just is not my cup of tea. Maybe an alternative date could be arranged. I was looking forward to drooling over all the nice Parkers our members would surely bring up. But not in the rain.

I'm of the same mind Allen, especially when we can't gather inside because of COV restrictions. If I hadn't made the commitment to bring venison stew (which I have not started yet) I would simply opt out of it. But I'll wait for Pete to let us know if it's still on. Heck, I don't mind shooting in the snow but not rain...

Right now the forecast is predicting 60% chance of rain at a max temperature of 48 degrees in the warmest part of the day.

Right now I see showers all day long so not the best conditions for a get together and shoot. I'll make a call tomorrow morning based on the forecast at that time. Should we need to cancel due to weather (I am not fond of shooting in the rain or getting old doubles soaked myself) we could reschedule the shoot/get together for MLK Day on Monday 1/17 and we would have the club to ourselves. Thoughts?

Given the forecast of rain showers starting at 7AM and rain starting at 11AM and through most of the daylight hours it is best to cancel the NYD shoot. We can reschedule for Monday 1/17, which is also a holiday and we will have the club to ourselves.

Pete Lester

It would seem a New Year's Shoot is just not in the cards for 2022. The forecast for Monday 1/17 is for snow and high winds in the morning changing to heavy rain and high winds. So with that said the NYD shoot at Major Waldron's rescheduled to MLK Day this coming Monday 1/17 is canceled. We are also fresh out of holidays until Memorial Day, see you in the Spring.

First one we ever did was just as described above...

I look forward to this one every year. I have the itch to shoot so regardless of weather at least one day this weekend I am going down to my range on the back 40 (really more like 35). I have two throwers that are hooked up to trip lines so I can shoot alone if needed. The lines are quite long and I can be 50 feet away and off at angles. I will have to snowmobile down but that makes it all the better. I especially look forward to the protection shoot so the 10 gauges will be in action. Finally found a Remington 32 for low money but that has not arrived yet. Hope it does today. It is 8 below right now with 20 mile an hour winds so If I go down today I will need to have a fire in the fire pit. The range has some open areas of course but is still in the middle of the woods. A lot like regular hunting conditions. One of these days I hope some of you guys will come up for a little shooting. I have to keep the shots down to a couple hundred or so to keep the neighbors happy so it can't be too many at one time. Hope you all get some shooting in sometime soon.....

15 below this morning so today would not be worth the drive Allen and Dean. I shot yesterday but only rifles. I can shoot a hundred yards and have a bunch of the AR500 steel gong targets at various distances. I have been changing sights on my 1895 405 to get something that I can acquire quickly and actually somewhat see! Can't see those open sights like I used to. Most of my hunting rifles either have peep sights or pistol red dot sights. The red dots are so small and easily mounted on almost any rifle. Have them on a Winchester 88, 54 and my Encore muzzleloader. I will probably take the shotguns out today as it might break 10 degrees after lunch. Should be some better weather soon when a trip up to shoot will be worth the drive.

some pics from my trip to the range yesterday. Loading the snowmoblie to a couple pictures of the range. Cold day but I built a small fire to warm the hands. All the wood was wet that I had stacked. Had to go the some dry limbs on standing trees to get it going. Cold but a fun afternoon.
