We have debated adding another dog, but already have three.
Our niece, trying to be helpful, sent us this picture. I don't know. Seems pretty scientific.

Fostering dogs for several years we had issues with "failed" fosters, i.e. ones we could not part with for adoption and kept.
We found that 2 was great, three was also great, but when we went to 4 it was a bit overwhelming even though we loved each and every one of them That was just our experience though. :-) YMMV
Good meme though! Like the old Lays potato chip slogan.

our dogs live in the house with us, we had three once
2 setters and a golden retriever
it was a bit much
two has been the norm and has been a good number here

Our dogs live in the house with us too. Four English Setters and two German Shepherds!! Yes, we jumped off the deep end right into the crazy pool.

We have four now. Two Labs (one retired who's deaf, one who would rather eat and play than hunt), a new English setter, and a scrap dog that's my wife's (a Cavadoodle) but cute as a button. Four is a lot but I look at it this way: Lock your wife and any one of those dogs in a closet for three hours, and only one of them will be happy when you let them out. That's the creature you want to surround yourself with.

My mom told dad if he got another dog, he could give it her name, because she wouldn't be around anymore.

The man who owns a pheasant preserve near us sent me a picture of his 11 bird dogs, all sitting and waiting for their bowls of food to be set in front of them. I have never seen anything like that.

In our fostering days one holiday weekend we took two other association member's fosters so they could go out of town. We had 17 dogs in the house for the weekend. My wife is a late nighter and at 2AM they were all getting a bit rammy and she let them all out in the back yard, fenced. A big fight and dog shouting match ensued. Mucho noise. I had multiple neighbors knock at the door next morning to complain. I had slept through it all so had no idea why they were complaining. Fostering in a small sub 1/4 acre lot HOA community. Good times...
