I'm sorry Dean, have you considered the first four answers could be wrong?

Never gave that a thought Greg.... :eek:

How about 12 .

Dean's answer of 18 seems logical and Randy's answer of 12 is plausible as well.

Dean's answer of 18 seems logical and Randy's answer of 12 is plausible as well.
There's a very specific pattern to each of the equations actually.

Okay Greg..... do you know what the correct answer is? Is there a correct answer?

You did not specify integers, so as a progression, how about 10.5?

Following the sequence, then Deans answer of 18 is correct

9 x 9 + 9 = 90
8 x 8 + 8 = 72
7 x 7 + 7 = 56
6 x 6 + 6 = 42
3 x 3 + 3 = 12

I agree with Randy. It's 12.
Reggie Bishop

I did it this way--
9x8=72
8x7=56
7x6=42
6x5=30
5x4=20
4x3=12

Assuming there is a 5 and a 4 in the table Reggie would be correct, but there isn’t.
Going strictly by the numbers in the table I’ll stick with 18.
In fact, 9 = 90 is an assumption as well because we are expected to assume there is a 10 above the 9 in the sequence.

Exactly. The clue is the very first line. That tells you to use "logic" to compute the answer.

I also approached this as did Reggie, but when the implication was that it was incorrect, I went back and looked at the numbers as if there were no others.
So, assuming this: the progression from 6 to 3 is that 3 is half of 6. Following this then 3.5 is half of 7. So, if the numbers are multiplied, 3 times 3.5 is 10.5.
Hey, when you're told your wrong you have to keep trying...what can I say?:crying:

My thought process
9-90 - 18
8-72 - 16
7-56 - 14
6-42 - 12
5-30 - 10
4-20 - 8
3-12 - 6
2-6 - 4
1-2 - 2
0-0

I'm with Reggie and Randy on this. It would seem each equation is on it own and not linked. In each the first number is multiplied by a number one higher than itself so:
9x10=90
8x9=72
7x8=56
6x7=42
3x4=12

I have no doubt it is 12. I'll have to reread the thread to see where the 18 comes from.

Is it this simple? The answer is Please. Answer = Please.
Very tricky.

That is assuming 3 is multiplied by 4 and the sequence is not supposed to that 3 is multiplied by 6.

I'd flunk it. None of the equations are right. 3= 3
9 does not = 90
8 doesn't = 72
and so forth.
Only when the "Math test" offered is preceded by the word "Assume", and ended by asking "then 3 equals what?", would it be a valid question.

I go with 18. The difference between them on the right decreases by 2 until the last gap, while the difference on the left side stays at 1. When you get to the 3, the difference on the left is doubled, so if you double the math on the right you get 18. This solution gives you consistent math in both columns.

The correct answer is THE answer that makes you feel best about your self, so put what makes you the happiest on the page and the teacher will give you a gold star. And we all know that life is not about learning it is about collecting gold stars.
Sorry, I haven't finished my coffee yet. I believe the answer is 12. That is the one that makes me feel the best right now. Maybe when I finish my coffee that will change.

12 is the answer.
9 x 10 = 90
8 x 9 = 72
7 x 8 = 56
6 x 7 = 42
3 x 4 = 12

Again, here is a test with no parameters stated. If you come up with an answer, and can show your work, and the math is done correctly, then your answer is just as valid as any other.
