So I have returned home from the 2021 Grand American and what was, for me, a very successful tournament.

Here are a few personal statistics.

During this Grand American, I shot to two guns exclusively.

1) Parker SA, SBT, serial no. 235793. Straight stock, 32 inch barrel choked “Full” according to the original hang tag.
2) Parker GHE, serial no. 230740. Pistol grip, vent rib, beaver tail forearm, double triggers, 30 inch barrels choked .020/.030.

Classification for this tournament:
1) Singles – AA
2) Handicap – 22 yard line
3) Doubles - D

Over the course of five days I shot in 7 events and at 820 targets, which included 20 shoot off targets. I shot no practice rounds (didn’t want to waste any hits).

I had a total score of 766x820.

Break down by event:

1) Preliminary Doubles – 89x100
2) Champion of Champions (singles) – 99x100
3) Preliminary Doubles – 94x100
4) Singles Championship – 197x200
5) Doubles Championship – 97x100, followed by a shoot off – 19x20
6) Preliminary Handicap – 84x100
7) Handicap Championship – 87x100

Break down by discipline:

1) Singles – 296x300
2) Doubles – 299x320 (includes the 20 shoot off targets)
3) Handicap – 171x200

Awards: ATA World Doubles Class D Champion.

During the course of the tournament, I had four 25 straights (two of which were in Handicap) and three 50 straights. And I had a personal best long run of 146 straight, registered, singles targets. This run comprised the last 74 targets in the Champion of Champions on Wednesday, followed by the first 72 targets in the Singles Championship of Thursday.

Someone, else where, commented about my shoes. I replied: "When I was standing in my post looking down and waiting for the next target, all I could see was orange." That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Mike Franzen, me and the gentleman I'm posing with in the picture were the the only side x side shooters at the Grand.

John, that is some incredible shooting and you make us all very proud while “sticking to your guns”… Parkers that is.

Is the monument to Fred Gilbert? He along with Johnny Jahn and Bob Allen were all from Spirit Lake. Congratulations on your shooting.

Thank you. I don't think the statue is of anyone specifically. I think he's suppose to represent trap shooters of old. BTW, he's holding a hammer gun. But not a Parker.

I have looked at that statue many, many times and thought to myself "what would those old shooters think of todays shooters and the "race guns" they shoot and the scores that they post".

Just thinking out loud.....

Don't you think that today's ammunition has helped scores?

Not just helped. I believe it’s the biggest factor.

Sure wish I could have attended the ticker tape parade they held for you in Vienna, Ga. upon your return from the Grand.

Of course I'm just yanking your chain. Congratulations John. That's a helluva accomplishment using those"ancient relics."

Is the rule at the Grand still that you have to shoot factory only or have they relaxed it last two years since factory ammo is harder to come by ?

John Davis

That rule was suspended this year. And unless I'm mistake, it only applied to handicap in recent times. Although, I believe in the past they required that you buy all your shells from the shell house.

Seems to me when I used to get the program years ago in advance they had the prices per event with shells included you just had to inform them if you wanted REM , WIN or Federal . I remmember a few unscrupulous fellows that would go there pay the entry fee get their shells then according to them put them in their vehicles get their reloads out and go shoot . Taking the factory home to resell . As it seems to me the prices for factory were about the same as cost from distributer s .

If shooting at the Grand you are required to shoot new shells in all handicap events... Reloads are allowed in the Singles and Doubles.
