I'm in the process of bringing a high grade Syracuse D grade back to life and I want to soften the case colors so that the newly cut engraving is more visible. Any suggestions on the best way to do it? I've been advised to use rottenstone and linseed oil?? Any thoughts?

I've heard of using Flitz but you have to be VERY careful you don't go too far.

Is Flitz a chemical or a mild abrasive. I've heard of it but don't know anything about it?
I've used rottenstone before but in a sock and with water, to get a french polish on wood. It's very slow but does the job...at least on wood.

As for Flitz I can tell you the Liquid works a LOT better than the patse on a stainless steel slide on a 226 Sig. Almost like two different products.

As I recall some smiths use toilet bowl cleaner and a cotton cloth to remove case colors. Pretty easy to take off a bit at a time. I have used Flitz and it will remove case colors in a heart beat, so unless you really want to remove them completely go at it slow. PS. I had a friend who had a little tarnish spot on a Merkel 47E. Used Flitz paste and a cotton cloth and it ten minutes while he was watching tv he had removed all case colors on one side. Ended up taking them all off because he had no choice at that point. French Grey it was.
