Jon Hosford is a nice gun and makes a good product. It is a good deal if you need such a tool.

Ken,
I have one and love it. It is easy to use and very accurate. Not cheap-but-worth it in my opinion!!!

Ken I also have one (that was the reason I to offered to measure your barrels) no it's not cheap but if I had had it when I bought a 16 ga Parker from Julia's, and had Bill measure said gun "It's .030" and it was only half that (and they told me to pound sand when I brought it to thier attention) :cuss: well if I had the gauge then I wouldn't be out $5,500 so as Jon say's it only takes one time to pay for the gauge ... :knowbetter: Eric

I also have one an use it often. Today I am going to loan it to a well known Michigan Parker guy so that he may properly inspect a new to him DH that is very light in weight.
I am also going to to buy one of Jon Hosford's expensive but worth it barrel dent raisers. That is of course when I save the money.

We use his tools exclusively for wall thickness measurement and dent raising. Jon's products are innovative and top quality - he doesn't market something until it has been exhaustively tested and proven.
Plus, he is a heluva nice guy!

Kenny,
This is the wall thickness gauge to buy. It's very accurate and easy to use.
I had quite the eye opener on a fairly expensive smallbore Fox. The barrels measured .027" overall, but the Hosford gauge found a spot where a dent was raised @ a small spot measured .014" where it had been struck after raising the dent.
If I had the Hosford gauge when I purchased this gun it would have gone right back to the seller. This gun has since moved-on with full disclosure of the thin spot, but at cost to me of about $3000.00 because I didn't have the Hosford gauge at the time of purchase.
The cost of the gauge and the time spent learning how to use it will pay off big in the future. It only takes one thin spot to make it pay for itself.

Marcus,
The Skeets Bore Gauge and the Hosford Wall Thickness Gauge have distinctly different function. The Skeets will give you inside bore diameter. Hosford will tell you how thick the barrel walls are. In my opinion both very important to determine condition of a set of barrels.

Thanks Bob. My original thought was that the Skeet's used in conjunction with a caliper would allow one to calculate the wall thickness. I guess that idea is flawed in more than one way. It assumes the barrel is perfectly concentric and does not take into account any area where a repair has been done (dent removal?) causing a possible thin spot.
Cheers

Thanks for the video link...My gauge is on the way 2nd day air...(-: It will be added to the tool box...I already have the stan baker bore reader set with 4 probes. This is a nice tool for reading bores and actual choke contricktions. With both tools I should be able to know everything about any barrel set. Thanks for the replies to my questions...SXS ohio...(-:

Kenny,
Since you asked the question is there any better price for one I did not know if you meant specifically the Hosford tool or another tool. I purchased the Manson Wall Thickness Gauge for $100 from Brownells and I am very happy with it. #513-000-066AC
I really wanted one without spending a lot for a tool that I don't use very often and was happy to find this at Brownells. The only negative is that the dial indicator was from our "Most Favored Nation" status trading partner whose President graced our shores this week. The instrument itself I believe to be machined here as there was no indication to the contrary.
