View Full Version : Butt Plate Size Question

I finally pulled the trigger on a P grade 10 gauge with 28 inch barrels on a #3 frame that was in my price range. This site has been incredibly helpful. I had to fire the triggers in order to get the barrels off of the receiver (I never would have thought of this!). Fortunately I have other 10 gauges and have some fired hulls laying around.

In any case, there's some minor slot damage to some of the screws and a broken butt plate (the toe is snapped off). I may leave the screws alone or hammer them out later since most of the material seems to be there on most of them. I would like to replace the butt plate before I use the gun though. Am I correct in assuming I would need a #3 butt plate to fit this gun? The majority of what I am finding on eBay, Guns International, etc. are #0-2. I haven't seen a 3 yet and I'm wondering if that is because they don't exist or if they are scarcer than the others. Thank you!

Have you removed the broken butt plate to see the number on the back side of it?

Incidentally, on a hammerless Parker you can drop the "hammers" without the use of snap caps or old empties without fear of damaging anytghing.

Yes, I took it off and it’s unmarked unfortunately. Thanks for the firing info; that’s good to know

You donnot have to drop the hammers to remove the barrels. You may have to currently with your particular gun, but it is not supposed to function that way.

In theory your gun should use the number 3 buttplate. It is very large. About 5-1/2” tall. There are not many sources for it. But they are reproduced.

Yeah, I figured out pretty quickly it wasn't supposed to be doing that. Fortunately, others on here have run into similar issues. I have an 1889 Remington that runs into a similar issue with the plunger.

Do you know where I might find one of these reproductions?

I found this, but after measuring it is a 1/8 inch too small in height and width

Thanks! I was thinking I was about to lose my 5th straight attempt at a Parker 10 gauge. The only consolation would have been the thought of it going to a fellow Pennsylvania hunter by your user name. The description was pretty accurate. Wall thickness is great. Even though it's got the 28 inch barrels it's still slightly heavier than my Remington 1894 and Baker 1897 10's with 30 inch barrels. I'm excited to get her out shooting :)
