Has anyone else who has had Del Grego do work on their gun experience longer than normal shipping time getting the gun back? I know he only uses USPS, but I'm going on 10 days since the gun shipped from him and nothing. When I contacted Larry, he said it could take up to 14 days. Needless to say I'm getting nervous.
Anyone else experience this?

Registered Mail is notoriously slow because of the required signatures at each point of custody.

John I just went through this. It took 11 business days for a package to make it from Ilion to Southern IN using USPS Priority-Registered. Last Thursday FedEx picked up a gun at my office in the late afternoon. On Friday afternoon, the next day, it was delivered in Central MI. USPS and registered mail has it's devoted followers who will cite the reliability of it. Personally I wonder if it's just an old habit that's convenient for them. To each his own I suppose. Ne need to be nervous on your end as this is typical for them.

Well that definitely makes me feel better. I never ship packages by the USPS. I've always used UPS. I think the pony express would be quicker than this.

It took about 12 days for USPS to get a shotgun to my home (C&R). It was Virginia to NY, not exactly across the globe. Watch and track it. It required a signature of course, but mine was left leaning against the mailbox 700 feet from my house in broad daylight, no signature!! On another episode of the Andy Chronicles, my STI handgun got delivered to an old lady who opened it, thought, "This ain't mine..." and she put it inside the box, left it open, and put it back on her porch until we tracked it and the UPS guy picked it up a day later. I have had the best luck with Fedex, but hang in there, USPS is very slow.

my dream 28 ga VH was in Atlanta for 4weeks from N Carolina than another 2 weeks to get to Vermont. I could have walked there to get it faster. not so quick to buy now if shipped through USPS.:bigbye:

Legh, I'll never ship Registered mail again. I learnt my lesson. Next time I'll just get on my horse and ride it there.

Nice avatar John. Mark had a fabulous idea on that one for sure. On the original topic FedEx picked a gun up here Monday going to TX, should be delivered today.

My "Registered" USPS story is similar...took almost 2.5 weeks and had to do a dance to get possession of the gun. Shipped a Parker that way, to myself. The local PO explained that at each stop, the gun was put in a locked cage to await the blessing of that supervisor, etc until the final destination. Might not happen quickly is a big understatement. But at least it WAS secure! And it did arrive intact...

I have never sent "Registered" again. I find insuring it for a few thousand $ gets their attention and usually arrives in 2-3 days as expected.

Good grief. That's crazy. Not to mention USPS tracking is terrible as well.

Similar experience with my parker 12 shipped from NY to SC. It hung up in Atlanta for days and days...convinced it was stolen, but finally arrived intact.

Why would a big insurance purchase make any difference to a government employee or a UPS or Fed Ex employee? Would any of them lose their jobs for a loss?

Shipped a watch USPS registered for repair last month. They required Registered & it allowed adequate insurance. 7 Days Virginia to NY. Added security steps take more time. Worth it when it’s something easily stolen

I don't know, but there must be some code they put on it so they are more cautious? They do pay attention to added insurance for some reason...at least in my experience.

The "code" is the standard employee caveat of USPS Registered Mail - whenever the item changes hands, EVERY person is required to sign for it as having been received in good order. Damage, eccentricities of packaging, and obvious signs of "forced entry" into the parcel are duly noted and called to the attention of postal inspectors. Barring any significant complications up to the points of transfer, the parcel is handed off to the next point of contact. Signing off puts the postal employee liable for criminal prosecution in the event they are lying or trying to conceal damage. The chain of custody is often delayed by days off, sick days, holiday shutdowns, and excessive volume of registered parcels. When a vendor tells you he or she has shipped by Registered Mail, expect a wait anywhere from 3 to 14 days, depending on the geographic locations of shippers and receivers. Erroneous deliveries from the next door neighbors to the transmission shop in town do occur occasionally; these are usually due to mail carriers fixated on their hand-held devices or are a result of the "she's gonna want me back" syndrome. The inherent problems are not in the structure of the system, but in the expediters. Be patient and don't hesitate to protest any irregularities in the process (e.g., severely damaged packaging, rewritten or relabeled delivery or return addresses. strange additional stickers from foreign countries, foreign postage, etc.). Any and all of these are subject to federal statutes and related tenets of prosecution under USPS regulationsl

I have very little if any faith in the USPS . I’m about the same for FedEx and only slightly more positive for UPS . Hence I waited a month for two gun to be delivered to me in Sanford rather than risking putting them in the hands of ANY carrier . Now I realize that’s not possible in most instances but I suspect it’ll be a good long while before I have any great amount of faith in any of the normal carriers .

Knock on wood I've always had good luck shipping through UPS. I even send my Krieghoff shotgun for servicing through them with no issues.

I know what you mean, my last purchase took over 3 weeks, tracking was very lacking, was almost convinced it had been stolen. Our local UPS is not much better, shipping is quicker but half the time is delivered to the wrong house.

How many times do we need to talk about disappointments with shipping agents?
The fact of the matter is that the beat one is the one who hasn't pissed you off lately. They are all horrible in one way or another.

I avoided all this by driving out to Delgrego's to drop off my 16 and again to pick it up. The gun belonged to my grandfather, then my dad a d now me. A family piece. Did not want to take any chances with a carrier

About 50 years ago, I bought a 6 gauge W&C Scott from Jim Tice in Moyock, North Carolina. It arrived with a broken stock and I filed a claim with USPS, for the full value of the gun, and/or repair. My claim was approved and I was allowed to keep the gun. Since then, I haven't had a bad delivery or a lost gun. I did have a Model 21 left on my carport, but I found it a week later and it was not damaged. End of story.
