View Full Version : Ammo shortage

Was at our local sportsman’s warehouse looking for target shotgun Ammo. Virtually all the shelves were empty! I’ve read this is common in many states now. Wonder if other members have experienced this.

Oh yes. What’s worse is the employees are starting to use the ammo shelf space for other items like coolers and archery equipment.... as if it’s never coming back.

John Campbell

There's a good chance the shortage could last until November 2024. And if so, there's another downside:

Every round you shoot will be next to impossible to replace. Hence, elective shooting sports could well lose participation. It might even begin with the Spring SxS...

I hope I'm wrong about that.

I have been stocking up on rifle bullets for a while. I have plenty of shotgun shells loaded in anticipation of upcoming shoots.

hoarding ammo is the new hot investment...It will never go down in value. gold standard? HA:bigbye:

My wife and I also noticed that sportsman’s had twice as many clothing items and non hunting things. The photo of the purses hanging in the Ammo area makes sense. Upon asking the clerk about Ammo he said a few weeks ago people were waiting for hours in line just to get just 2 box limit. This is scary and sad. Shooting a trap or skeet tournament may not be possible for a long time, let alone getting speciality Ammo like Bismuth or RST. There was no reloading components also.

The new form of gun control. You can have all the guns you want but nothing to shoot them with. It's like having a car but no gas to put in it,

Very true exactly

Tom Flanigan

It's not just the shells that are in short supply, certain components such as primers and powder is hard to get also. I load all my shells so this is an issue for me. I have a years worth of shells loaded, so I'll be ok for a while. But I hope things open up relatively soon.

Not so Rich. "Shall not be infringed." and limiting the availability of ammunition is against the wording and spirit of the second amendment. Arms were never intended to be used as clubs so any act to limit the availability of ammunition is infringement.

I agree with you but tell that to the powers that be. It might be against the spirit of the second amendment but go try to buy some ammo or reloading components and you'll feel infringed on.

Dean Romig

Right, and it would need to pe proven that it was some person of official athority or an entity that was preventing you from your legal right to acquire it, rather than just a shortage, in order for it to be ruled unconstitutional.

I have said this before and I'll say it again. You only have to have them ban lead shot and bullets in the name of environmental protection and it's game over. It will price it out of the reach of most people.

Rich Anderson

Lead shot has been banned for waterfowl for decades and California and possibly other states have banned lead bullets for both hunting and target shooting.

Dean Romig
02-23-2021, 01:01 PM
We need to fight the battle with science.

We hired a company at our club to do a lead shot reclamation on our Skeet and trap fields.

There was no, that's NO lead residue even to 10 inches from the surface and NO water or ground water contamination at all... anywhere in the site or surrounding it.

Well California is a place I would never live and you proved my point. How many people shoot 2 or 3 rounds of sporting clays once or twice a week at $60 a box for non tox shot? Not many I imagine. I agree with Dean.

Rich Anderson
02-23-2021, 02:20 PM
I doubt a private sporting clays range would ever be required to use non toxic shot. I agree we need to put science ahead of the idiots that make decisions for us but thats a steep uphill battle. Just look at our wildlife agencies anywhere in the country. There are few if any managed strictly by science. We have a resident moose population on an island in the great lakes. It was decided that these needed to be reduced in number so the DNR introduced wolves vs hunting licenses. What happens when the wolves eat all the moose?
Wolves were reintroduced in the Upper Peninsula and have wreaked havoc on the deer population. There was one wolf hunt a couple of years ago and less than a handful were shot before the crybabies got it shut down.

There are several trap/skeet ranges in the Ca coastal areas requiring non-tox (steel shot) target Ammo.. no lead.. probably most states are not like this fortunately but for me in CA it’s a fact of life here in certain areas.

I believe a recent previous administration created a shortage of ammo of all types when they purchased $2 billion dollars worth of ammunition over a short period of time. Price of ammo is going up and shortages will continue. Look for blue states to follow New Yorks lead to outlaw shipment of ammo to private individuals. Two years from now the current date is going to be considered the good old days.

Andrew Sacco
02-23-2021, 04:32 PM
Late last night I saw in stock clays 12g loads on Brownells. $11.29 a box, ouch. Shipping is $9.95 which is not too bad. Although I believe shotgun ammo can be shipped to NY, they refuse to ship here unless it goes to an FFL, so that brings the price up to close to $12 a box. Double ouch. I know RST is more expensive but I consider that a specialty load.

According to the internet you can ship ammunition to a New York resident as a gift/donation. Ammunition that is sold and ship to a NY resident is illegal and the purchaser is legally responsible.

After going to the RST web site, they have no restrictions about shipping to New York. Bob is evidently right about NYS law, however, some suppliers appear to keep the restrictions in place.

Like many of us I’ve been trying to get shells from RST since before Christmas. They were hoping to have powder by Feb 26 for production. That didn’t happen. I just tried their website and they’re closed until Mar 1 “to get caught up with the backlog”. I’m worried about losing these guys.

I had the opposite experience the other day here in south Alabama. Our Bass Pro actually had shotgun shells, 12, 20, 28 and 410 on the shelf. I bought four boxes of 20 ga Top Gun. Walmart wasn’t bad either. They had 12, 28 and 16 on the shelf, and, at the old prices! $5.50 for 12 ga Federal Game Loads. If you have an Academy near you, they are also doing a pretty good job. Ours had 5.56, 9mm and a bunch of other stuff in stock. Not a huge amount, but it was there and not too badly priced. A 200-pack of Winchester 62gr was $100.

This was my last order. Watch the website if it says it’s in stock they’ll fill it. Might take a few weeks but you’ll get it. If it’s in stock go right to your credit card and order it. I’ve seen it go from in stock to out of stock in a half hour.

Regarding California, NY, NJ, MA and all of the other Stalinist states, they have horrible gun laws. In ten years, they will have worse gun laws. And ten years later, worse again. I grew up in NJ and have been hunting and shooting nearly my entire life. I’ve never know things to get better. If the 2A is important to you, leave those states. Seriously, it ain’t gonna change for the better. That is one of many reasons I departed VA for Sweet Home Alabama. My family and I were very fortunate we could do it. Not everyone can. But if you can, get the hell out of those states. Freedom feels absolutely wonderful. It sure beats being angry, which I was. Now, very happy to be living among people who also value freedom. Sweet home.

I duck hunted in Arkansas a few times years ago and I noticed there were a lot of people open carrying handguns. I said, "I didn't know you had an open carry law here." The 9 foot tall dude says, "Why do you need a law to carry a gun??" He was SERIOUSLY perplexed and I think he hurt himself thinking about it. I was very jealous.

I was delighted to move here in July and find the process for obtaining a carry permit was, scan the QR code posted on the courthouse window, complete the application on my phone. I submitted it on a Saturday. On Tuesday, a nice lady called from the sheriff’s office, my 5-year permit was approved, and if I would like to email her a copy of my retired military ID, they would waive the $50 fee. Yes, ma’am and thank you!

I like the Super Target 1-ounce at 1180 speed and picked up 6 flats at $55. each when I saw them at a Distributor a few months back. That's a 2-3/4 DE load and relatively soft shooting. Boxes are marked "Extra Lite Target Load".

I load one ounce loads at 1200 fps for my 16 yard shooting. In my opinion, that's all you need at 16 yards. I save the one and one eighth ounce loads for handicap. It works for me.

As most here know 16-gauge shells are particularly difficult to buy nowadays. Yesterday a GB advert for 4 boxes of Remington Game Loads, those with the black-colored hulls, had multiple bidders and sold for $84. plus $15. shipping. That's almost $25. per box of 25 shells.

Well folks according to the most recent American Rifleman we are the cause of the ammo shortage. Hornaday, Fiochi, and Sierra said that there work forces are all working overtime and Hornaday commented that there workforce was exhausted. Browning and Winchester both replied that demand was extremely high. An individual rifleman was interviewed and commented that he had purchased a case for each of his 12 rifles. That set him back $3200. My only question is that those among who hoard ammo also hoard toilet paper?

Dean - A private deal from a friend who started a gun club, sold it, but still retains access to their stock. Passed to thru to me with basically no markup.. Wish I'd bought more, but it's not fair for me to hoard his stock, since he's doing me a favor.

Today was a very profitable/expensive day. Tennis got cancelled this morning, so made a beer run across state lines to Capelli's beer distributor in Washington, Pa--much better prices than here in Wheeling, so WTH, picked up 4 cases of Yuengling. Then on to a little business that sells reloading supplies on the side: picked up a couple thousand primers at $30/thousand, a few lbs of 20/28 powder and more shot. Price gouging has not hit here. Then cross country to see Brett Hoops, who had picked up a couple bags of shot for me a month ago. We ogled, weighed, and discussed our Parkers and future wants and needs, while his bird dogs listened intently( or maybe they were bored).
On the way home, got a call from my friend Mike who had just picked up a skid of dog food, several of us feed. So met him and took 6 bags. So I'm good for a while--plenty of shot, primers, and powder--plenty of beer and 4 months worth of dog food.

HR127 was introduced by the “useful idiot” Shiela Jackson-Lee. She’s so far left she makes Occasional-Cortex look conservative. The bill has NO sponsors. These leftists on the fed and state level introduce anti-freedom bills every year knowing they will not pass. They can then tell their “constituents” that they tried. That doesn’t mean we sit back and watch. EVERYONE needs to be vigilant and tell their state and federal congresscritters to oppose these bills. Chucky Schemer has been trying for years to pass the “Universal Background Check”. They need that bill to establish a central registry of firearms/owners. Next step is confiscations. DOJ even tells them it will not prevent violent crime. They don’t care about reducing crime, the left wants to disarm and control us all. They want subjects, not citizens.
