With that much 'gum' on the outside I can only imagine what it looks like on the inside. Looks like a decent gun to me also and will probably clean up just fine.... it will just take a lotta elbow grease... Hammer guns are far easier to clean up than hammerless though.

is there anything about this image to suggest honing?

I hope that 6 or more PGCA members don't have a bidding war over this one.

I consented not to bid because a fellow PGCA member is going to try to buy this one. It will be hard not to bid because this would be a good addition to my colletion of 10 bores! I will however just watch to help a fellow Parker guy.

Mark,
All is fair in war and gun auctions.
If you want the gun, bid on it. I think it will clean up real nice.

Dave,

Thanks! I know we all compete for these fine old guns.

If you wanted the gun I would not bid against you. If we both really wanted it I'd offer to flip a coin for bidding rights. I can always buy a gun. Trustworthy friends are much, much harder to find.

Respectfully,
Mark

Wouldn't you think that it would be money ahead to hire someone to spend about two hours cleaning up the exterior of these guns? Spend $50 cleaning them up for show, and I think you'd double your money

After I confirmed that Kurt and my other friend were done bidding I tried my luck. The gun sold for $3360 which is more than I was willing to pay.

Congratulations to whoever the rich and lucky bidder was!!! This will be a nice gun.

Holy cow! I imagine Mr Duffyguns is a happy camper. Kurt was clearly the lightweight in the bidding! We may all be crying when pics of the restored gun come up on the forum, which I hope they do. Except for the cc, that gun will look near brand new when it's cleaned up.

I must have really wanted an original D grade hammer gun to bid that much. I put my last bid and left to move more snow. Decided enough was enough and time to walk away. Little did I know Everyone else quit before me! Now I am stuck with an original D grade hammer gun, with original wood and butt plate, good dimensions, and with some minor work, shootable. Good thing its January

David,

You got a great gun!!!

If the bores have any minor flecking, surface rust, of pits try using ball hones (Flex Hone, Google it). They will clean up minor flaws like magic!

Have someone redo the Damascus barrels while you clean up the outside and fix the lock and you will be the envy of all shooting.

Once again, congratulations on a very shootable Grade 3 Toplever 10 Gauge Parker!

PS: If you need Shreman Bell's low pressure 10 gauge loading data send me a PM with your email.

Mark

Thanks for the words of advice. I'm already loading for a lifter, grade 2, 10 ga. What is your guess with the lock? besides a good cleaning.

Mark Ouellette

Kurt Densmore is the person to ask about that.

If welding and refitting the hammer or sear is required Francis Morin is the welding expert.

The lock problem will likely be a worn sear end or notch. Whatever it is, it can be repaired. If the locks need welding or any repair, send them to Al Edge. He's a magician at fixing locks and is very reasonably priced and fast. He did a brilliant job of welding up and re contouring mangled/broken sidelock sear ends for me. He may be "Old Dominion Firearms"?? Can't remember. I'm on the wrong computer tonite.

David,

Enjoy that 30" Grade 3! I'm kind of kicking myself for not breaking the bank on this one. Last year I bought a super Grade 3 with 32" and 28" barrels. These are beautiful guns!!!

Serious showed up today. gun has been shot very little. has a lot of cc , surprising. Barrels seem to be main concern. Will need to find someone to refinish. Rust seems to be surface as I have found no pitting.

Dave,

Great news about the overall condition and the no pitting on the barrels. This D grade you have should clean up real nicely. If you say the barrels only have exterior surface rust, here's a suggestion you can try before sending them out to get refinished. You may just like how they look and may not need it. I recently cleaned up a set of barrels to a LC Syracuse grade E hammer gun in similar condition.

Surface rust - I moistened the exterior of the barrels with Kano Kroil oil on a patch and wiped down the barrels length wise with 0000 steel wool. Take your time. You can use Hoppes as well. Wipe away the crud with cotton cleaning patches.

After cleaning the rust away, it has been mentioned here on this board on many occasions Formby's Tung oil does wonders for black and white Damascus barrels. It seems to help the iron and steel black and white contrast and it is a good preservative.

Before applying Formby's the barrels have to be real clean. Prep the surface with denatured alcohol. This dries quickly. There is a suggestion that you can put a broom handle in the breech secured tightly with a vise so the barrels are horizontal. Next, moisten a lint free cloth with Formby's. One patch goes a long way. Simply start from breech to muzzle in long even strokes. I don't have a vise so I just put gloves on and stuck my finger in the muzzle to be able to turn the barrels as I am applying.

Allow to dry. Place barrel in an area lint free. Overnight you should be able to handle the barrels. Allow 4 to 5 days to fully cure. One application should do it. If you do more coats the barrels have a plastic look to them. This is also a reason why I choose the low gloss than high gloss.

You can buy Formby's Tung oil at any hardware store.

Again, congratulations on your new acquisition!

Removed the rust from barrels and they do have light scattered pitting on the outside. Have any of you had experience with having damascus refinished with light pitting. These barrels need a good barrel man.

Test fired old serious today, after complete dissambly . cleaning, oiling and reassembling. Fired 1 reload each chamber and decided it was time to take her hunting again. First time hunting with a hammer gun. Loaded up black gsp. She pointed a rooster right off. Old serious came to life one more time. What a hoot. Dave

Good on you for getting the old girl back out in the field David! So, what was the lock problem?? Gunk? Just a loose screw? I've found that on the hammer guns that have not been apart for decades that every screw in the lock assemblies is at least a bit loose.

David Holes

The gun had surface rust on the lock parts and the rust was keeping it from working. I totally broke gun down into every piece possible. Used several types of cleaners to remove rust and dirt and then oiled everything while reassembling. Cleaned up the wood and reassembled. You were right when you said they are quite easy to work on. Everything went great. There was very little gunk in locks just light rust. The barrels will still need work to make very nice. I am sorry to say I have not taken time to learn picture posting. Will try to get at it. I do appreciate other pictures posted and thanks Dave
