Our dear friend and club President (Frank) was severely injured in an accident on October 18, 2020, and he and his family needs everyone’s help. On that day, Frank, along with his wife and son, were working the Virginia State Sporting Clays Championship event. Frank was working on the 5-stand tower when he stumbled and fell 30 feet to the packed earth below. He was air lifted to the nearest trauma 1 hospital, emergency measures were taken, and he was placed on a ventilator. Physicians determined that he sustained a fractured sternum, 3 fractured ribs, 17 facial fractures and possible damage to his eyes. He remains on the ventilator, has had two operations and still remains unconscious. His physicians have determined that Frank suffered a traumatic brain injury called a DAI, the extent of which is unknown. He may awaken in a couple of weeks, couple of months or not at all from this injury. Although he has medical insurance, there are numerous medical and rehabilitation costs that are not covered – especially long term – which could be substantial. Plus, the family has living expenses and school expenses for his son attending Liberty University. Your contributions will mean so much to them as they focus on Frank’s health and recovery. Brenda requests prayers for Frank to awaken and for his eyes. We request prayers for them all, and for your help financially to alleviate a burden from them. Thank you.

Update on Frank from Brenda:
Saturday: "Frankie is about the same today. He is still moving his left arm... He is still moving his facial muscles. He is still not awake. They did give him one unit of blood today because his blood count was staying low, but they think that's from the initial blood loss and the surgery this past week. They do not believe he has any active bleeding."
Sunday: "Frank's day was a bit like the weather we had today. He had a rough start, but then became more comfortable as the day progressed."
Thank You ! for the prayers and for caring so much ! I don't own a Parker and if I never do, Im ok with that. I am on my way to you home page to join this fine organization. If you will have me ?

Update as of November 4:
The doctor says that Frank is progressing as expected, but still doesn't know the extent of the brain injury. Brenda asks for prayer and specifically for each of the areas of healing that is needed.
He is moving his left arm and making plenty of facial expressions. Also moving both of his feet a little bit. No movement of his right arm at all. Pray for consistent and on command movement.
Chest x-ray is much better today as far as the pneumonia goes. Tylenol seems to be controlling fever. Pray for the antibiotic to continue treating the pneumonia.
He does have some GI upset and they are providing medications to help.
Continue to pray for his eyes to completely heal.
Pray for him to be able to come off of the ventilator again as he has been on it continuously since Sunday's setbacks (pneumonia, BP, kidneys).
Pray for Frank's caregivers who are working diligently with Frank on this journey.
When Frank has met certain criteria he can be transferred to what's called an LTAC, which is a long term acute care hospital. Fortunately the closest one to them is Virginia Baptist Hospital in Lynchburg. They have already put in a referral and as soon as the doctors feel that he is stable enough to move (which is not going to be awhile), he will hopefully be coming to Lynchburg. Another prayer to add to the list.
GoFundMe Update:
Thank you does not adequately say it all. The tremendous outpouring of love, care, prayers and donations is astounding. As of this morning (11.5.20 @ 7am) the GFM is at $18,050 (goal $30,000). What a wonderful group we have who are so willingly supporting this humble, giving family in their darkest time.
Remember if you don't wish to use GoFundMe, you can mail a donation to the club which will be deposited in the bank account opened for them. Have checks made payable to: Frank Davis Family. Mail to: Brushy Mountain Club, 1813 Izaak Walton Rd., Hurt, VA 24563 or drop in safe. ($3,465 collected at the club so far.)

Frank is progressing in his recovery. There is good news to report from the last several days:
Frank has been moved into a step-down floor from the intensive care (last Sunday)
Looking for insurance approval and available room to move to Lynchburg.
They have started Frank with speech therapy. This is hard since his jaws are wired shut so this presents additional challenges. He is trying to use his voice.
They know he is seeing something with his eyes, but not sure what at this time. He has not been awake enough to evaluate vision.
He continues to nod to questions and does follow some commands.
As with every brain injury there are up and down days and up and down times during every day. Frank is trending upward every day that goes by.
Brenda asks that you pray for Frank to continue to have up days and that his days show him responding more to commands from everyone (Brenda, Drs., therapists). He needs to be a little further along before he can be considered for TBI rehab as he needs to be able to participate in therapy in order to go to the TBI centers. Also, pray for his eyes to heal.
Also we need to remember to pray for Brenda and Jacob. They carry a tremendous weight on their shoulders and in their hearts. Pray for his Drs, nurses, therapists and caregivers to provide everything that Frank needs.
Thank you to everyone who has helped in any way to support Frank, Brenda and Jacob. Whether through prayer, visits, just a note and financial gifts.
GoFundMe Update: Current status - $ 27,455
BMC Collections: $12,065
What an outpouring of love from so many people. Club members, other shooting friends and clubs, friends of the Davis family .... all together in support of this friend of ours.
Thank you so much.

PLEASE KEEP PRAYING ! And THANK YOU !Update on Frank from 11/14/2020
It is so hard to believe that it will be four weeks ago tomorrow that our world changed so drastically. But then again, things like this happen all of the time. I would hope that we have learned many lessons from this so far, but one is that we need to make sure that our family and friends know that we love them. In a matter of seconds life changes, as mentioned above, so stop whatever you are doing right now and contact someone and let them know how much they mean to you.
Now, on to how Frankie is doing. He had a very busy week.
He has speech, physical, and occupational therapy a couple of times per week and respiratory therapy on a daily basis. He has been responding some, as mentioned in my other posts. He does open his eyes when you call his name, he does mouth words, nod to questions, wave to us, and when he feels like it, he will give us a thumbs up.
He was very tired yesterday and today. He did sleep most of today while I was visiting him. However, someone told me that deep sleep is needed to heal the brain.
As for his eyes, he does open them when you call his name. He does track more with his eyes that he had been doing. However, they have not been able to do a complete examination to determine how he is seeing or what he is seeing.
His facial fractures seem to be healing nicely and the doctors are pleased with the fixes they made and the healing he is having.
Otherwise, we are just in a holding pattern, still working on some medical conditions and praying for more progress in awareness so we can go to our next place for therapy. I am not sure where that will be, but we are praying that he will be accepted to the Shephard Center in Atlanta.
As for me, I did not do as well this week as he did. I want what is best for him but I also, to be honest, what more than that for me. Yes, I am being selfish. I want to see him progress every day like a hare running a race, but that is not how the brain heals from an injury. It heals more like the tortoise.
The doctors, nurses, and therapists continue to tell me that he is making great progress and that we are still very early in this journey.
For prayer requests:
Pray for him to make more progress in his responses and with moving all extremities to command and spontaneously.
Pray for his eyes to completely heal and that he will be able to see.
Pray for his general health as this kind of injury is also hard on your body.
Pray for his blood work to continue to normalize as we move along. Specifically pray for his blood count and his blood sugar to normalize.
Pray for the Lord to prepare us for our next move. I would love to see him go to Shepherd Center if it is the Lord’s will.
Pray for me. I have very good days and then I have a day that I just want to crawl under a rock and hide. Just being honest.
Pray for Jacob as he has only two weeks left in this semester. He has been able to work out most of the issues he had with his next semester, but is still working on one. He has sent in an appeal on the matter and is waiting to hear back on that.
Words cannot express to each and every one of you how much you mean to use. There is no way that we would make it through one day without the Lord leading the way, but also from your encouragement through your kind words, cards, texts, telephone calls, etc. Please know that I know everyone who has contacted us, brought us food, sent him financial support, but it may be a while before I can get to each of you to thank you.
Again, thank you so much. God bless you!
Psalm 37:3-4
Trust in the Lord, and do good;
dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.[a]
Delight yourself in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Good news. Frank had a good weekend and therefore it is anticipated that he will be heading to Sheltering Arms in Richmond tomorrow. Brenda will be touching base with both Roanoke and Richmond facilities on the move.
Brenda and Jacob have received a blessing from one of Brenda's cousins. Her cousin owns a townhouse not being used at this time that is only 15 minutes away from the Richmond facility that Brenda can use at no cost. What a tremendous blessing.
Lift them all up in prayer. Especially pray that Frank makes a safe trip, that he transitions smoothly to Sheltering Arms, that they provide and meet his needs, and that Frank continues to improve daily in this journey.

Mark, I am so sorry to read of Frank's severe mishap and difficulties along with those of his loving family. Prayers for his speedy and full recovery.
I have a question. As you posted here the Virginia Sporting Clays Championship was held at the Brushy Mountain Club, and I wonder if Frank and his family who depend on him are covered by accident/liability insurance policies held by Brushy Mountain. An incident comes to mind that happened at a registered NSCA shoot a few years back; a shooter suffered a non-shooting related injury, minor in comparison to Frank's, and the club's insurance ended up paying him $50k.

Yes the officers of the club are working on that. Please keep praying for Franks progress. Here's the latest update on his condition. Frank was moved to Sheltering Arms in Richmond late Monday. He is all settled, has a wonderful room and bathroom with a large window that has a nice view of the woods and sky. He is in the rehab portion. Tuesday they started him on his PT, OT and speech therapy for an hour each.
He is already starting new things. Use his voice with the trach capped. Got him up on the side of the bed, in his own shirt to help control body temperature. Almost got him in the chair but needed a different chair, so maybe soon. They will be working on building his upper body strength. He will be using very new technology as they just opened this section of the facility in June. He was able to move all four extremities and wiggle his toes and move his weaker sides (right arm and left leg) more.
His Dr. is a favorite at the facility and is sympathetic and receptive to any questions Brenda and Frankie have. They have great communication with Brenda and daily schedule that Brenda can follow. She can visit for several hours after therapy at this stage.
They are increasing meds to stimulate his brain that they said will get him better. "we do not know what the future will look like until we get there, but he will be better! He is improving daily.
Frank does not remember the fall (which is normal as a protective measure of the body to protect Frankie). Brenda is assuring him that they are working to get him better after a fall. He seems content with this and understands.
A special thing that Brenda got to see was Frank's smile when working with the speech therapist.
Pray for him to be healed, for his eyes, that his brain is knitted back together as God would have it, and that his mouth heals quickly so his jaw can be released so he can swallow and make vocal sounds easier.
Brenda thanks everyone for continuing to lift Frank in their prayers. Please pray for his team of caregivers to be exactly what he needs in God's perfect design.
May everyone have a blessed Thanksgiving.

Thank you for everyones prayers ! Great News Today !From Brenda:
I walked into Frankie’s room and he was so glad to see me. He knew me, talked to me the whole time I was there. I asked him lots of questions, he knew all of the answers. Speech therapy asked Frankie questions and he answered. Frankie was drinking water from a cup, while holding the cup by himself. Speech therapy asked him to look at the clock and tell her what time it was and he said “2:51”, and he was right. YIPPEE! These are answered prayers indeed, especially in knowing that he can see.
Frankie was moving all over the place in bed, I mean his legs and arms. He was turning his head, and just overall progressing in his movements. However, he is so uncomfortable in the bed. He has been there now for 42 days or so, and his body is tired of lying down and it hurts him. All he wanted me to do was get him up and get him out of there. He wanted to go outside, anywhere but there. I am taking all of these as good signs.
Now for the bittersweet part. He is entering the stage of being a little mad, which is a normal state in recovering from a traumatic brain injury. He knows that he is in a hospital, but he wants to go home
Prayer requests:
That he becomes more comfortable with decreased pain in his back, his legs, and at the pressure wound.
Pray for the pressure wound to heal.
Pray that he leaves his trache alone.
Pray that we can get the wires cut soon so he can start taking more by mouth and we can get the trache out.
Pray for him to continue to progress physically and mentally.
Pray for every staff member working with him and others with a TBI. This is such a hard field to work in and continue to have patience with the patients. Pray for them to know how much to push each patient to become the best they are going to be after treatment.
Praises:
That Frankie is able to move his legs more, his right arm more, hold his own cup to drink, and complain.
That he is progressing every day.
For the staff who work in this job as it is hard.

Another great step ... Brenda received a call yesterday from Roanoke plastic surgery telling them it was okay to cut the wires and remove the screws from Frankie's mouth. Therefore Dr. Clanton is going to cut the wires and will get the screws removed as soon as possible.
Another note, they stood Frankie up three times yesterday for one minute each time. They said he did wonderful and that he was very strong. They expect that he will just keep progressing. The occupational therapist said she could not believe how fast he was progressing.
WOW! God is so good!

Today Brushy Mountain Club had a very successful Member Guest Fun Shoot with all donations going to The Frank Davis Fund. Words cannot describe how good it was to see Brenda and Jacob (Frank’s wife an son) back at the club. BUT that’s not the good news! When Jacob arrived at the club he received a call from an unknown number. IT WAS FRANK! They had a normal conversation he wanted to come home. No one at the hospital over 100 miles away had Jacobs phone number. Frank remembered it! To everyone who has offered up prayers THANK YOU. Please keep praying for Frank and the Davis Family. Friday, December 11: (6 days ago)
"When I walked into Frankie's room, he told me "hi" and told me to sit down and talk to him. We had a lot to talk about. It was a good conversation. He did stray at times a bit, but he is getting better every time I see him. He is getting physically stronger all the way around. His cognition level is also progressing.
I talked to his doctors yesterday. They are very pleased with Frankie's progress. They are amazed at how much he has improved in such a short period of time. The doctor said that Frankie was walking yesterday with the help of robotics and that he is getting much stronger in his extremities. He is able to help turn himself now in the bed and assist them when they are getting him up.
He is getting up and going to the dining hall every day for breakfast, lunch and dinner, even though he is only getting liquids. This is so he can reorient to the time of day. His wounds are healing. He is also going to start participating in more therapy in the evening with small groups of patients."
Monday, December 14: John 3:16 (3 days ago)
"Sometimes the day is hard and i am not exactly sure what to say. I think this is because I want him to be all better now, but that is not going to happen. It is hard to see him upset about a situation that he cannot quite figure out. This is because he has gaps in his memory that can be filled in with just about anything that seems to him to fit his environment.
We did have a little setback on Thursday. He became very lethargic so they checked for infection. At that time, his white blood count was 16. He showed a urinary tract infection and lung infection, but today his white blood cell count is back to 4.9, which is really good. I saw him on Wednesday and, other than seeming tired, he did not appear to be in any distress. It is funny how they can change so quickly overnight when an infection sets in. However, he has bounced back from that episode very nicely.
He is actually doing really well. He, as mentioned before, knows many current events, people, where he works, etc. but sometimes his brain will have a gap and it is hard to tell what he is going to say next. To get a better idea of where he is, look up the Rancho Cognitive Scale. He is considered to be a IV or V at this point. Please continue to pray for him."
"he really wants to come home, which is understandable. He cannot quite understand that I cannot take care of him here yet. Please pray for him to just be okay with this for now.
Pray for his pressure wound, which is getting better."
"Pray for him to start eating more so that they can get him off his feedings.
Pray for him to continue to progress in his cognitive level.
Pray for him to continue to progress with his strength.
Pray for Brenda for she is struggling, but that is human nature."
For all of the cards that you guys have sent to him. They are priceless. He does get a little emotional when I read off the names on the cards.
Tuesday, December 15:
"I spoke with the nurse today. Frankie is doing well. He can transfer now with the use of a waist belt instead of the hoist. He is participating in all of his therapy. He really is just doing better all the way around physically and with other activities of daily living. Please continue to pray for his eyes. I spoke with him today and he told me he just cannot see very well.
Today, December 17:
I just talked with Frankie on the phone. He said that he walked, with braces on his legs, with the assistance of a walker, for 74 feet today. He said that is the farthest that he has walked. He said "it's all coming back." He said he ate most of his lunch. He told me, when I come to see him tomorrow, to bring his phone and his iPad. I am really not sure whether to do that or not but I guess I will just pray about that. That my friends is "Good News Thursday."
Praises to be for all the prayers that have been and are continually being lifted on Frank's behalf to our heavenly Father. Miracles of prayer that are being answered here at the most precious time of the year ... the birth of the Christ child!

Update from Brenda last night:
Psalm 106:1-2
Praise the LORD!
Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good,
for his steadfast love endures forever!
Who can utter the mighty deeds of the LORD,
or declare all his praise?
Frankie is improving every time I see him. This is very good news. However, the days that I visit with him have some very bittersweet moments in them. First, he really wants me to stay with him at the hospital, but I explained to him that COVID regulations, put in place by the hospital staff, will not allow that. Second, he really wants me to bring him home so he can “sleep in his own bed”, and return the next day for therapy. Third, because his short-term memory is getting better and better, he remembers that I am not there every day, which makes him sad because he is by himself.
On further explanation on how he is doing, I am amazed at the improvements he is making from day to day.
Today, while I was there, he stood up at the sink and brushed his teeth. Before that he had participated in many rounds of therapy: physical, occupations, and speech.
He told me that the speech therapist told him why he could only have liquids and that they were going to do another swallow test on him. Of course, I had not heard this so I was not sure exactly how this conversation with his speech therapist actually played out. About 30 minutes later the speech therapist stopped by the room and told me that Frankie wanted to see his last swallow test and he wanted her to explain to him why he could not have anything but liquids. So, long story short everything that he had told me was exactly correct as to what happened earlier in the day. The speech therapist also said that he would have another swallow test on Wednesday to see if they can advance his diet.
As far as his strength goes, he is now in a regular wheelchair. He is able to maneuver around some by himself. He is still weaker in his left leg, but he again is improving in the strength there on a regular basis. He had a little setback with his right hand as he had an IV that infiltrated, which slowed down his therapy for a few days as this was very sore. However, he has once again started to use that hand and arm more. Today he was able to do the bicycle motion machine with his hands without losing grip with his right hand, which is new for him. Otherwise, his left upper extremity has been strong from the beginning and his right lower extremity is getting stronger every day.
His eyes are another story. He is having a very hard time seeing anything close up. He says he cannot see out of his right eye at all. However, he can see out of the left eye. The next step here is to see a neuro-ophthalmologist, which we are working on.
I am truly amazed at his recall. He can remember the day of his accident up to the point where he started to climb the tower, but he cannot remember anything after that until just recently. I told him it was by the grace of God that he could not remember that right now. There are still times that he has some gapping him his thought and speech, but he is getting so much better.
Here are a few specific prayer requests:
1. Pray for his eyes. Pray that he can understand that we are working on getting him to see a specialist to evaluate this.
2. Pray for him to continue to gain strength in his extremities, especially his right arm.
3. Pray that he is able to have his diet advanced from just liquids after this swallow test on Wednesday. I think this will help him a lot. It will also move him closer to getting rid of his feeding tube.
4. Pray for his short-term memory to continue to improve as it has been doing.
Praise:
His overall improvement physically and cognitively.

From Brenda - Monday, 12/28/20 - 9 PM
Acts 20:24
“But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus.”
This was my verse of the day. I thought this was so appropriate after seeing Frankie today. You can read the story below and you will understand too.
Hey my friends. I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas. It was different this year, but it was still a good day. We will be opening our gifts when Frankie gets home, as that is what he has said he would like to do. So, if you see that my Christmas lights are still up in the middle of January, just remember that Frankie also asked me to leave them up until he gets home.
He is really remembering more and more every day. He still has short-term memory problems, and he still gets some things mixed up from the past, but he quickly remembers when queued. He remembers that he fell, although he still does not remember the fall, praise the Lord. He does tell everyone who asks him about it that he is a miracle as he lived through the fall. He states that he knows God has a plan for him and he is going to try to figure out what that plan may be.
Otherwise, he is doing very well. He is continuing to get stronger and stronger. He works hard in therapy and it shows. He says that he does not need all of the therapy equipment that they use there; all he needs is determination and he will get stronger. Of course, the determination is necessary, but we also need the expertise that the therapists give him every day.
His trache site is almost completely healed. The pressure wounds look so much better, with one of them being almost completely healed. However, he still has a good deal of healing to do in the second wound. Because of this, he is in bed other than for therapy and at meals. He does eat everything that they send him on his tray. He is still on pureed foods and he is still getting some tube feedings as he needs a lot of calories to help with the skin healing. Frankie does not like being in bed so much, but he does not like much about being in the hospital at all. He wants to come home, which is closer than it has ever been. He is still tentatively scheduled to come home on January 5th.
He did ask the nurse today to tell him all of the medicine he was taking. He also wanted to know if he would be on all of the medicines he was on there when he got home. He is planning already on what he has to have when he gets home. They are slowly discontinuing some of his medications, which is a good sign.
His eyesight is getting better. He does not even realize it, but it is. He can read more and more every day. He notices things on the television and points them out to me. He is also working the television remote, for the most part. This remote works the television, the lights in the room, and the computer system that shows us his schedule for every day, as well as other information. I cannot really work this remote. I am sure Jacob would laugh at this statement.
So, here are some praises for you.
He is able to participate so much more in his activities of daily living.
He can stand up on his own strength. He cannot walk yet without help, but that is coming.
His trache site is almost healed.
One pressure wound is almost completely healed.
Some of his medications have been discontinued.
His eyes are getting better every day.
Prayer requests:
Continue to pray for his eyes to get clearer and clearer.
Continue to pray for the pressure wound to heal.
Continue to pray for him to gain strength in all extremities, specifically his right arm.
Pray for his balance to continue to improve.
Pray for his voice. He can speak, but his speech is not as clear as it can be. He gets frustrated with this as he has to repeat himself many times a day as we cannot totally understand him. He does talk fast at times, but it also is a result of the brain injury. Please pray for it to become clear again.
He has it in his head that he is coming home on Tuesday, January 5th. Please pray that if this does not happen, he will accept that this is the best place for him to be.

Great News - Frank is home and is starting a new part of his recovery process. Brenda and Jacob got him home late yesterday. They are settling in and adjusting and all were exhausted.
FROM BRENDA:
At this time there is a strict NO VISITORS policy due to COVID and his low immunity system. He has to get much stronger and build himself up before anyone will be allowed to visit, except for nurses and therapist. Once he gets stronger, we will revisit this status and adjust as we can.
Frank will be busy with home health (speech, occupational therapy, and physical therapy). Once he gets stronger he will advance to outpatient therapy, but that will be awhile yet.
If not for all of you, I do not know what I would have done. I know that any number of you are ready with just a telephone call to help me in any way that I need. You have all been so generous with your donations, cards, calls, and prayers. I do not really know how people make it when they do not have a community to come around them and support them. Frankie's community is large and so cool. I knew he was a special guy, but I did not realize how many other people thought so until this happened. My community is the best. Yes, we share some of the same community, but many we do not.
You are each a blessing to me, from the ones who only know him, to the ones who only know me, and to the ones who know both of us. I would say that we are truly blessed beyond measure.
Matthew 11:28: "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."

Brenda has just shared that Frank is in need of prayers.
From Brenda:
The past few days have been bittersweet. Frankie was at home, but that did not go as we wished for. He had a setback physically and mentally. It could be that the overstimulation of being at home caused this. Sounds crazy, but brain injuries are crazy. We are working on getting him back at Sheltering Arms. Hopefully this will happen today. PLEASE PRAY FOR (insurance) APPROVAL TO COME THROUGH ON THIS TODAY!
I cannot begin to tell you how exhausting this has been for us, but mostly for him. He wanted to be home so badly, but his brain still cannot interpret everything that it needs to in order for him to be here yet and be safe. What I mean by that is that it is not safe from a fall standpoint and mentally for him to be in the house right now.
I really do not know how to feel. I had to talk myself down yesterday because i am a fixer and I cannot fix this. I realize that there is nothing that I can do to change any of the things that have happened or are happening. I do know that I serve a mighty God, who is carrying us through it all.
I just have to give a shout out to all of the people who helped carry me through yesterday. I could not run this race without you guys.

I have been working on getting Frankie some long-term care. I just received a call from my contact at Tree of Life Services in Richmond, Virginia. They are willing to accept Frankie as a long-term patient. Tree of Life is a residential rehab center that keeps patients long-term, based on 30 days at a time, in order to help them recover from brain injuries. They think that he may be there for three to four months, but this will be evaluated every 30 days. This is a private pay venture at $30,000.00 per month. If not for so many of you giving so generously, we would not even be able to entertain this move. They will evaluate him every 30 days and if he can come home sooner he will do that.
I cannot express to all of you how much you mean to our family. You have showed us love that we feel every day. A community is very necessary at all times, but more so in times like this.
Thanks,
Brenda

Please be informed that someone has been sending e-mails out using a hotmail account pretending to be Frank Davis. Several received one back in the winter after Frank's accident. A new one from Board.pres...@hotmail.com has been sent to several members in the last couple of days. They are trying to solicit money in various ways. Please do not open and definately do not respond.
Thank you.
