Parker Brothers inlaid a silver or gold shield into the butt stocks of all grades , other than Trojans with none. So here is the question !!
If a person wanted his/her initials engraved on the shield, how would you know the arrangement of first name, middle name & last name as engraved on the shield.
Example---Allan Harry Swanson----would it be AHS or ASH. What would tell the difference in the arrangement??
Example please.

Monograming is sort of a lost art today and figure there has to be a rule to how the letters are arranged and sized. (at least with an interwoven monogram).
I know that the Last initial would a lot of times be in the middle if the letters are all side by side (ie: ASH in your case). And usually the middle letter (for last name) would be slightly larger.
Some of the old world interwoven monograms can be a struggle to decipher the letters let alone speculate on the order of them.
I suppose if you were wanting your own gun engraved with your initials, the answer would be however YOU want it to be.

my understanding of traditional mongram etiquette is the the middle letter in larger and represents the last/family name - then first on the left, middle on the right
none of my shields are engraved - I guess you would need an example that letters to the original buyer to see how Parker did it

What if you never paid attention before, you have a gun with no references to the owners or PGCA records. My gun just has the three equal size initials. What comes first ,the chicken or the egg ??
I agree if one of the letters is larger& in the middle---most likely the family name.

As long as we are on the monogram subject, any thoughts on these letters from a DEO-Grade Remington --

In general...if all letters same size, first, middle, last.
As Mr. Dudley says, if middle letter larger it is first last middle.

I assumed you did not have an example - but I mention it because I bet more than one member does - so we just need them to share

Here's one that was ordered by Henry A. Bishop for his wife Jessie Alvord Bishop.

Also, usually, if the persons name has a suffix, you see the FML suffix, arrangement.

I have a theory,i.e.
Allan Harry Swanson
If the initials are the same height size, plainly written as AHS, then the S would be in the middle--- engraved ASH
Now if the same initials are written with a period after each letter---A.H.S.the engraving would be A.H.S.---THE DIFFERENCE IS THE PERIODS.
What say ye !!

Note Dean,s example---THE PERIODS

Could be....
And note in Dave's example, the 4 dots are put there simply for correct spacing of the 3 letters. There are also dots before the first letter and after the last.

I would agree with that.

And Allan's 'period' theory prevails.

I found this (https://www.markandgraham.com/shop/make-your-mark/apply-products-to-make-your-mark/?PRESELECT=true&MONOTYPE=mono3&MONOCOLOR=000&MONOSTYLE=mono540&INITIALS=SCG&N=4294965249+4294965309)monogram maker on the internet. It shows a lot of interesting possibilities.
It could provide some ideas.

I would suggest if you are doing this to ensure the gun can be traced back to you, make it as easy and unmistakable to read as possible. We’ve seen many a debate on these pages as to how a certain group of initials should be interpreted and read. Probably the least ambiguous way would be to have someone like Geoffroy Gournet engrave Allan H. Swanson. That leaves little room for doubt as to who’s name is on the gun. I have a 10 gauge done like that. I’ll try to find a pic of the shield.

Dave Moore, your dad's initials are also my initials. I keep an eye on his website looking for some of his castoffs with monograms. Bill Murphy
