In my introductory thread I indicated that I'd post a few pictures of the GHE we recently inherited. It's got a little rust, but seems to be in acceptable condition.

I would suggest that you get some gun oil and a soft oil cloth and wipe it down to stop the rust and give it a good cleaning. You may get lucky and the rust will be light surface rust that has done little damage. But, you need to stop the rust process as soon as you can with a little gun oil.

Thanks. That's next on the list - I do have some gun oil here, but it's been pretty busy with the holidays.

Bill just slap some oil on all the metal, only takes a couple of minutes and then when you have time you can give it a good cleaning, just get some oil on it Now to stop the rust.

This afternoon's project was to oil the gun & clean it up a bit. A little Hoppe's went a long way...

Got some more work to do, but most of the rust was surface rust - it came off easily (wiping it down). Will still need to brush a bit of it, and need to consider whether to have the barrels restored as there are some imperfections in the bluing (hence a couple of rust spots). All in all, progress was made.... and there's a thin coat of oil on it now.

Also wiped down the Winchester skeet gun, finding it to be "cleaner" as it was used for competition, not hunting.

This is a case study of why guns should not be stored in carry-cases for many, many years....

So a bit more work today. Ran some patches & cleaner through the barrels - they're clean. On the outside, there are just a couple of spots on the barrel that feel a bit rough (where there was a bit more than surface rust. Those spots are not deep, but I did use a bit of Hoppe's foaming cleaner & a small nylon brush. Aside from the rough spots, it's tough to tell where the rust was anywhere on the gun.

Left it with a thin coat of Hoppe's oil - looks much, much better. Mechanics operate smoothly. Maybe I'll get a few minutes tomorrow to post pictures.

Before I take it out for a few rounds, I'd like to have someone take a look at the barrels. Is there someone, preferably on the east coast, that is recommended?

Don't mean to be obtuse. I'm in mid-Atlantic, but I'm willing to travel for top notch experience/service. That means anywhere from roughly Georgia (or Northern Florida) to Massachusetts (or Southern Maine) and westward to Ohio/mid-Kentucky.

Yeah, it's a big area, but top-notch trumps travel. Texas and California are really too far....

If Dewey is backed up as many of the best gunsmiths are, a PGCA Member and frequent forum poster may be able to help. Jerry Andrews, 304-843-1740, is an outstanding LC Smith gunsmith and is becoming a good Parker smith. Jerry is also very reasonably priced. I have bought and traded guns with Jerry several times and would "trust him in my foxhole".
