GH Damascus

1904 GH 30” Damascus 12ga barrels .734 in both tubes both chokes start at 4.5” from muzzle ....... all pretty normal to me but both chokes are .004, beautiful slow taper and no signs of honing.
Tubes are clones of each other checked and rechecked with Hosford gauges, thoughts? I have never seen this combination would have assumed Full/Full or close to it.

Generally speaking, if the chokes are not mentioned the gun most likely left the factory with F/F chokes.

Scott, what are you using for a patterning board? And is the inner circle 30” or is the pattern board 30”?

It is a 4’ piece of 1/4” steel with a flat washer welded in the center which allows for a focal point as well as an anchor point for a homemade protractor that I use to mark the 30” circle.
Use white lithium grease and a paint roller to clear the plate for the next shot.

Board has worked out well but is not good for steel shot patterns, that would not be very safe.

While at the West London Shooting Grounds near Notholt, England some 45+ years ago I was fitted with a Try-Gun. We shot a round steel plate eight to ten feet off the ground. They would swab it with what looked to be white wash between shoots as the stock was adjusted. I can't recall how far away we were from it though I recall it being about 20 yards or so. You have a great set up Scott.

The range for gun fit is often 16 yards from the eye

Mathematically that allows a simple translation of inches on the board to fractions of an inch change in the stock

If they're .004 i would have expected less lead in the circle. At 30 yards that's a great pattern. I just can't get my head around that .004 choke measurements and that many in the circle. its a good pattern hunt on.

I agree William. Parker Bros. Considered a gun to be choked “cylinder” if it had .003” or .004” or less. Those are excellent hunting patterns and would likely be effective out to about 40 yards.

I have a CH 12 that letters with a cylinder choke in the right barrel. It measures at .004" Interestingly, a 16 GH lettering with a cylinder choke also measures .004" I'm sure that if you could find and shoot some 1904 shells through that gun, the pattern would open up some. Modern ammo and plastic shot cups can tighten those old chokes. The patterns you have look great to me.
