Unfortunately I spilled some #8 shot over my Size-O-Matic 900 and now it is jammed up tight.
There are no disassembly instructions in the owners/user’s manual and I need to know the steps I need to follow in order to take it apart and clean the shot out of the mechanism.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

I googled your loader and found that you can download the manual for free. If it is the same one you have no use to you. I will look at Shotgun world reloading forum to see if anything there.

My search there turned up nothing of use.

Dean,
Give them a call. They offer technical assistance and are very nice folks in my experience.

Dean - I have taken P/Ws apart and successfully put them back together. It is a big job to take them down completely and re-assemble/adjust. I would try not to disassemble more then necessary. Can you jiggle the handle and try to figure out where it is jammed. Failing to do that, I would take the shot/powder hopper off and look at the rack and circular gears. Shot could have gotten in there and caused the mechanism to lock up. The next thing I would look at is if something blocking the crossbar from moving. You can call be if you want to discuss further Billy Gross 703/753-8613.

P.S. Drain the powder and shot before you do anything. Also manually try to jiggle the turn table, something could have that jammed. Will the cross bar move up and down at all?

Right - that’s what got me into this mess in the first place....

No, nothing in the gear mechanism, thanks.

Well, the lady at PW was very nice and gave me step by step directions... now let’s see how good I am at following them.

Thanks to all.

If the gears are clear, I would try to see if something is blocking the rotation. If you don't see anything, the next thing to do is to take the tool head off. There are two screws on top of the posts to remove. You may have to then lever the tool head up. Billy

Also, try to see if something is blocking the pull arm from coming down. Billy

Good Luck!

One thing you don't want to do is pull harder on the operating handle. Know that’s a mistake for sure.

I got it all apart last night but chose to knock off before I got too tired and messed something up.
Back at it soon.

The actuator bar that has the peg sticking out for the linkage were initially made out of steel on the 800B’s then when I got 800C’s they were plastic . I kinda think they became plastic for two reasons . The first being cheaper , but the second and more important if something binds up in there and you keep on pulling the plastic peg sticking out will break first rather than staying together as steel would and breaking something more expensive to replace .

Yeah, like the shear pins on my snowblower... that might see some use today:cuss:

My 800B loaders, five of them, are going on fifty years old, so I can't help much. However, on the 800B, when things lock up, it is usually an unseated primer or a half seated primer that must be found and cleaned out. That is in the "book". I just did that fix a couple of days ago. Somehow, I have always been able to find the culprit and fix it without breaking something, but it is sometimes a time consuming search. First, I had to turn off the shot and powder and block the primer feed. When I finally got to the problems, it was uncertain which shells had how much shot, powder or a primer, so I discarded all shells in progress at the time of the blockage. Small price to pay to eliminate the possibility of a double charge or no charge. I have hand stamped numbers on all the stations on my turntables so I can say, in my mind, "shell in #2 has no powder". Or maybe it would be "discard #2 through #7 because of doubtful content". One thing, after more than a half million shells loaded and several shot spills, I have never had shot seize up the machine. In my experience, a seized machine is always an improperly seated primer or shell case. Good luck, Dean.

Okay... As I suspected there was a bunch of #8 shot in the workings (none in the top rack & pinion for the powder and shot sequencing) and I have it all back together again and it is no longer jammed. Now to look up a good recipe for 20/28 for the several hundred 28 gauge once-fired shells I have.

I'll keep y'all posted.

13 gr. of 20/28, AA hull, Claybuster 5034 HS wad, Winchester 209 primer..

Chuck - what's the velocity and pressure on that load??

1200 fps and 10,700 psi. Bump it to 13.5 gr and it 1250 fps and 11,600 psi. Checkout Alliants web site reloaders guide

I may cut it to 12.5 to lower the pressure and I don't need 1200 fps anyway and besides, I’m not shooting an auto-loader.

Billy Gross

Dean - I use a similar recipe to Pa SxS in old style AAs. 13.2 grains gives me 1200 fps, and 14 grains gets me to 1300 fps. I like the 1300 fps for 5 Stand and Sporting Clays with #8 shot. I load the 13.2 with #9 shot for skeet. I tried Trap with the #8 1300 load, but that didn't work too well. Billy

Billy, your 1300 loads are outrunning the targets. When I shot competitive International Skeet, I loaded legal 7/8 ounce (24 gram) loads at just under or over 1200 FPS when other shooters were shooting 1300 FPS plus loads and suffering from the recoil. By the way, I shot International Skeet Olympic Tryout shoots at your club and enjoyed the atmosphere very much.

Billy, yBy the way, I shot International Skeet Olympic Tryout shoots at your club .

Fairfax R&G is one of the three nicest if not the nicest club I ever shot registered skeet or trap birds . When Willie Finch , Bob Myers , George Swenson and Norbert Schnipple were there I had a blast . Now I think out of that group Bob’s the only one still hanging in there !

Bill Murphy

Yup, Bob is the only one left. He may still be here when we're gone! Bob and Willie always seemed to shoot on their own squads, but I have been squadded with George and Norb several times over the years.
