OK I can't watch one more minute of Netflix-----What Parker or ??gun and what load do you plan to use for spring turkey, opens 5/1 here in western NY. How about U?? I will be spending lots of time turkey hunting this year.
I plan on using my Winchester Model 12 Duck with 1 5/8 oz 3" # 4's Browning turkey loads.

If I go and that’s a mighty big if and I wanna use a 12 gauge it’ll either be a WIN 12 Heavy Duck or a Belgium A-5 Mag . And if I do I’ll take a few of the rather old shells .

Top of the list is a new GHE 12 gauge from Rock Island. Then comes the LC Smith Long Range, my first GH which is a 12 2 barrel set.

I haven't decided if I'll shoot my DH 12 with 30" Titanic Steel barrels choked .033" and .034" or if I'll shoot my 3-frame D grade 10 ga. Lifter with 30" barrels. I have no idea of the chokes as I don't have anything that will measure a 10 ga.

In any case, they both have brought home the bacon in the past, several times each.

I will give it a shot with my DH 12 gauge with 30" D4 barrels choked full and full. I've got some RST #5 shot loads for it which pattern pretty well out to 40 yards.

I plan on carrying my 1925 12 gauge Trojan 28” m and f barrel with some hand loaded 1 5/8oz #9 tss shot. I used some this last fall through the 28 gauge and it was deadly on pheasants. I’m hoping for the same results if i get to pull the trigger on a turkey.

I'll be lugging a big Ithaca/ Mag 10/ 3 1/2"/ NID. Spring Turkey hunting is about the only thing that is practical for that beast.

Do any of you short 10 ga guys Turkey hunt with the RST loads ?
Im debating 1 1/8 oz vs the 1 1/4 oz loads and #4 vs #5 shot .
My 10 ga 3.5" guns never cared for #4 2 1/4oz loads on the patterning board .
I am thinking perhaps a lighter load of #4s would pattern better ?
I dont think a turkey will tell much difference between a #4 and #5 pellet but I dont have the experience to back that up .

RST 1/8th 5’s work fine for me...i’m patient.... my bow hunting training makes me wait for a 20-25shot at max, no matter what ii’m shooting.

IMO if you're going for a lighter load you should also go with a smaller shot size in order to maintain pattern density. I would go to #6 rather than #4 in replacing the #5 you have been using. The effective target size of a turkey's head and neck are really quite small and a denser pattern will be more effective. The bones you need to break are not big and heavy, but a sparse pattern has more of a chance to miss those small but critical places.

A few months ago I made a trade with a fellow from central PA for his (departed) Dad's old turkey gun. It is a 16 gauge Winchester model 97 (1942) 28" full choke. He gave me a couple boxes of shells to include Remington high brass #6. I never met his Dad but intend to keep the tradition going.

I'm like Mark R., I like them up close and personal as I have been using a vintage recurve for years. This year I'll be using a new to me 32" 20ga Sterlingworth stoked with 7/8oz. handloads of #7 1/2's in the right tube and #7's in the left choked XF/XF. I know people will say 7 1/2's? Like Dean said it's really all about pattern density and it's worked for me for many years.
For me the challenge is getting them within 30yds. and then seeing the "oh sh#t" look in their eyes when you pop out of nowhere.

i have known a coupla fellows in my life that would only use no 7 1/2 shot on turkey but they never shot at over 35 yards and they killed lots of turkeys...my personel favorite shot is no 5 in the right barrel and a load of no 2 s in the left barrel...charlie...

5392, built in 1875, on the 1875 Patent. It is a $125 grade, with 28” uncut barrels, straight grip and SSBP.

I have 5949, a 10 ga D also with the recessed hinge pin. It's the one on the first page with the big longbeard.

Mine also is on the 1866 and 1875 patents.

I prefer #6 shot for Tennessee gobblers. Very effective with properly choked gun.

I was hoping to go to North Carolina this spring and try to get one with my new 28 gauge Flintlock, with a Parker as a back up. Looks like if I go this year I will need to hunt near home in Rhode Island and they don’t have a muzzleloader season(or option).

I will use my tight choked #2 frame 10 gauge hammer gun, with 32” twist barrels. If I can shoot a swan with it...it should do well with turkeys too...

Mine, its going to be a Ithaca nid super 10 loaded with 1 1/2 oz of 6 s. This gives the patterns i have found in all my 10 s over the years.
Now if the state doesn't close the season with this flu thing going on. We have to go to a checking station to check in our birds and deer too.
Good luck
Scott

We shall see. Price was right!!

Harry shot and missed today. We were covered up with them. I have not heard such aggressive gobbling in years. We saw four and located at least two more in another area. Going back tomorrow for sure

I have more than one choice when it comes to choosing a turkey gun to use this spring, but my favorite is my Winchester 21 3" 20 gauge which I bought a couple years ago. I ordered a two barrel set, the longer barrels are 32 inch choked .045 left and .045 right. And no, after you look at the picture of the muzzle, the barrels have not been cut. They are regulated to pattern with modern Federal tungsten super shot #9, or the like, at just about any distance, or at least until gravity takes the load into the ground. I knocked a gobbler stone dead at 52 yards last year.
