I will taking my most prized possessions, my Brittany and my new Parker DH, that would be new to me since this grand lady was made in 1905, to Kansas to hunt pheasants. I have not hunted in Kansas before so following the suggestions of both Gun Dog and Pheasants Forever forcasts I plan on focusing on the Southwest part of the state. Any guidence in terms of specific State Wildlife Areas or consentrations of walk-in areas would be appreciated. Thanks inadvance Bill.

Jent: The place you are talking about is the home place of one of my friends. His parents still live in the ranch house. Be carefull the cedar trees and I think 40 acres ARE NOT in the walkin hunting. Outside of that I was there opening weekend and we saw a lot of birds but you better have young strong legs and good dogs. By now you will not see as many and the place is 5 sections so they will run all around you. Good luck. I may be there myself after the first of the year. Lee.

You will need boots for your dog. The sand spurs are very bad in some fields. There is a very good walk in hunting area 7 miles South of Ness City and 12 miles West. This walk in hunting field is about 3 or 4 square miles. Park near the 70 or 80 christmas trees planted in a row running E to W and hunt to the North of the trees. Jent

Thank you Jent and my little Brittany really thanks you because it would have not been possible to hunt without dog boots. The hunt was a real bust, I actually saw more deer than pheasants (8 deer 5 pheasants). I only fired my gun twice in three days of hard hunting and both of those were more out of frustration than actual shots at birds with any realistic hope of baggging a pheasant. It must have been as dry in Kansas this year as it was in Central Texas because any land that was grazed by cattle had little cover left over for wildlife. Lesson learned-go early in the season and maybe be willing to pay for the right to hunt private land. Thanks again for your help. Bill

I arrived in Kansas late Friday night in Ashland and was told that the only place to buy a license was Dodge City so I drove to the Wal-Mart Saturday morning and got my license but they were out of Hunting Atlas as was everyone else and since it was the weekend the Parks and Wildlife office was closed. I was about to leave Dodge when, out of desperation, I tried the Boot Hill Museum and a salesperson said yes her mother has some just go over to the Longbranch Saloon where a woman dressed like Miss Kitty had some in the trunk of her car--how appropriate for Dodge City.
The Hunting Atlas would be INFINITELY more useful if the Parks and Wildlife folks would include the roads or even the GPS coordinates of the Walk In Hunting Areas. I could never find the 4 to 5 square mile area suggested in a thread above nor could folks that had lived their entire life direct me--very frustrating and totally unnecessary. End of rant. Bill

Bill: I had the same problem when I was out there the second weekend of the season. We ended up southwest of Ness City about 25 miles and fortunately we had a road atlas in one vehicle that gave us some of the road names(major) on the 911 grid which helped as well as my grandson had a GPS on his cell phone. After driving around for 2 hours plus, we finally positively identified one of the walk in areas and were ok then. A lot of the roads are vacated and although the Fish and Game map is gridded by mile square sections not all the roads go through. We found one that we had to drive across a tractor road a 1/4 mile to get to the entrance. I have an old aquaintance on the Fish and Game Board and plan to make him aware of this situation for whatever it's worth. We got a big laugh at my son and his buddy in the other truck calling them Gilligan and the "Skipper" and we were not in the mood for a stranded three hour cruise. We acused them of skipping the map reading class in high school. The 6 of us ended up with 11 birds so that helped. Happy New Year!!!! Lee.
