Congrats to Brian Dudley on the sale of his "rainy day gun". Got me thinking of what is your favorite rain gun. Mine is an old beat up VHE 20 with cut 26.5 in barrels that is my favorite grouse gun. What's yours?

many or most of my guns have honest wear
but uplands or marsh any of them from best to worst will see rain from time to time
I dry them well and oil them

I have had Parkers in the past I would be hesitant to take out in the rain... but not any more. hose Parkers have gone down the road of curatorship. Any functioning Parker I now own has had, or will have, rainy day service. And like Rick, and I'm sure everyone else, it will be wiped down, dried off, oiled, lubricated and protected until its next outing.

of course, I tend not to hunt on rainy days now, not like when in my 30-50's. Rain days become "scouting days", driving around looking for new covers. Have never hunted ducks, but hope to this year.

I've never hesitated to take any gun out in the rain or snow. If they are are properly cared for before and after the hunt there is no harm done. My opinion, for what it's worth.

BTW-
one trick - after a good drying, i take a hair dryer to the metal parts just to warm them up
that takes care of those spots, like the narrow channels along the ribs, where some moisture may hide. And then a light oiling flows better too.

I bought it to hunt with! Its been iced over and rained on several times. I try to keep the water out of the action by keeping under my coat. This year I made a canvas bib to carry in my pack so during a down pore I can still hunt grouse....(-: 1st picture is last season in the U.P. steady rain. My 1st hunt with the new Fox 2016 the ice storm, 28 degree's and raining, barrels had 1/4" of ice on them! CSMC guns can go back and be disassembled and cleaned free each year....(-: Its been back 2 times. SXS Ohio

Since I can hunt most any day of the season, I seldom hunt rainy days. I did buy a gun or two thinking they would be for rainy days, though: a Parker VHE 16, VH 20, and an AyA 453 28 gauge.
Now, if you want to talk "spectacular weather" guns...

I have a #1 frame PH with cut Twist steel barrels that was picked up for about $250. It had been painted camouflage. The bores are rough yet they handle lite loads that still kill effetely. A dear friend gave me a set of tightly choked 16 gauge Damascus barrels that miraculously fit the PH. Swap the cocking hooks and off I go.

Trusty old Stevens 5100 in 16ga. The first double gun I ever owned, and probably as good a gun as I need, really...

Have a 870 lw. 20 that the magazine tube rusted on a hint of humidity, de- oiled it and did 2 coats of car wax no more rust so did that to all of them. When in rain I make sure to dry them off before they go in the truck then at camp they are dried and heated gently. Never had any problems. These guns we like are some really well made things and we worry about them accordingly.

I used to carry a rainy day gun with me on all of my hunting trips. Then one day it hit me; "Why am I doing this?" Now I just take two guns with me just in case one of them has a mechanical problem.
These thing are just metal & wood, if you take care of them & wipe them down correctly after they've been in bad weather you're good to go.
Now if we start talking high condition collectable guns that's a different conversation. They wouldn't be on a hunt with me.

About 7 years ago I came upon my rain gun a 20ga VH that was left in a case wet. The outside and the bore show signs of the resulting rust , guns weight is 6lb 3oz with 28" barrels. It also has great dimensions of 14 1/4 - 1 1/2 - 2 1/2. With a DHBP.

I have two actually, a DHE 20 with a straight grip and 26 inch barrels C/IC the other is a 28 inch straight grip Fox Sterlingworth choked .003 and .006 in 16ga
The first hunt I went on with a new to me Holland & Holland 20 it rained all day but only after I was a long way from the truck. It got wiped down and blow dried and was no worse for the experience.

I hunt with 90% of my guns and they all have been very wet to soaked at times, properly cleaned and put away, I can't detect any lasting damage. Here in the Finger Lakes it seems to rain or snow every day during the hunting seasons!! I do always have a couple runners cooling towels in my pocket and wipe the rain and or water off (from my Lab) my duck guns. These runner cooling towels are sponge like and will absorb water when wet. They are a great product and keep the water on your gun to a minimum. That being said the few high condition guns I have never get hunted. Way more guns get ruined from falls, poor storage and poor gunsmithing in my opinion.

Craig, never heard about "runner's towels" thanks for the tip.

Eric runner's soak them and place them on their neck to cool themselves in hot weather. They work great to dry off a gun in wet conditions. Only problem is they don't sell them in camo color, mine are wild plum!

Many years ago I hunted in a light mist with a nice little Browning and after a few hours I noticed the stock getting sticky. It ruined the finish. I stripped and refinished it.That never happened to any other gun and I hunted on a lot of damp days. Gerald.

We have a mini vintage shoot at Elk Creek in Owenton, Kentucky once a month. January sported foul weather and I had my VH choked .015 & .025 about to go into the slip case when I remembered a Trojan 12 I had not shot. It's choked .030 & .040. I do like a little competition, but I thought what the hell and took it instead. I shot a 94 so I started shooting wobble trap with it and taking my fair share of the pot. Funny how that worked out and I wondered why I shoot the gun so well. Then I realized it is stocked exactly like my fathers 20 Trojan that I have been shooting for over 60 years. My rainy day gun has become my everyday gun.
