The Procter & Gamble Paper Products Company plant at Mehoopany PA was at one time (and perhaps still is) the largest consumer paper products facility in the US. The plant makes facial and toilet tissue, paper towels, disposable diapers and some other Company product lines. Here's a clip from one of our local papers; pic taken on Monday and self explanatory. This is at a turn into the Distribution Warehouse referred to, and a friend told me the trucks were sidelined well over the top of that hill. The huge Warehouse has at least 100 truck loading doors. Wow!

Expand pic to read the detail; that's a drink coaster at the top ….. :)

One of the local CostCos had a line from the front doors, along the front of the building and down the side this morning before the doors opened. Most grocery stores around here are out of pasta, beans, and caned staples.

Hey, I’ve got 3-rolls of 2-ply Charmin and a pint of hand sanitizer that I’ll trade for a 20/32 DHE.

as I replied to this on the Fox board -->

unreal

went to town this morning- hoping to get paper towels - I am house breaking a puppy- great timing

the paper goods - water and meat departments were pretty much cleaned out- signs for paper goods and water say 2 to a customer but people were rushing to those areas with empty carts and filling up- one guy was in line with 8 of the large cases of bottled water - dollars to donuts he has public water at home

short tempers in the parking lot vying for close spots

i feel for those truckers - long boring days - hope its overtime

but to quote the governor I want New Yorkers to know that I'm not urging calm. I'm urging reality.

Went to Wegman's nearby about an hour ago...ours has 24 cashier lanes - only ONE was closed; next to sanitizer and paper goods, the wine & beer sections were humming. My wife goes nearly every day when it opens (06:30) and said this AM was just like what I experienced an hour ago. Next went to Giant Pharmacy to pick up a prescription - same deal there. HAPPY SELF-QUARANTINE!!

well -finally at least some good news out of this

just got an email - from one of the wineries where we participate in their 'wine club" discount program -

"not going anywhere for a while" -- they'll ship cases of wine to your house - free shipping

Be careful about using paper towels which are going to end up in the sewer. They won't dissolve like TP. Could result in a big Roto Rooter bill

Been there, done that. It’s painful at a number of levels.

The other night my wife, not the biggest fan of guns, starts talking about “what if’s” and asks me how many rounds of ammo I have and I tell her that “I have ~ 750 rounds for my AR.” She asks “is that enough?” If 750 rounds of 556 isn’t enough, all the toilet paper in the world isn’t going to make things any better.

IMHO this is being blown out of proportion. Tens of thousands of people die from the flu every year all over the world.

The weather is warming up and if we run out of skid paper we can go outside and use a hose. A friend and I just finished butchering a steer so meat won't be an issue have plenty of bourbon, cigars. and ammo. At least gas is cheap first time it's been below $2/gal in a long time.

The problem is this virus is spreading rapidly. The medical profession’s concern is an overwhelming number of people needing treatment but not enough beds and or staff to treat the sick. We say that can’t happen but it already has in Italy.

Covid 19 is not the same as the flu.

Look at it this way: there is an effective vaccine for the flue and there are treatments that reduce the effects of the flue and still, as you said, tens of thousands of people die every year. There is no vaccine for Covid 19 and there are no effective treatments for Covid 19. And a Covid 19 vaccine won’t be available anytime soon.

In spite of vaccines and treatments the flue is a killer, imagine how much worse the numbers would be if there were not vaccines and treatment. If anyone wants to get a sense of what can happen here one only needs to take a look at what’s going on in Italy where treating Covid 19 is consuming virtually all of the country’s medical services.

I was thinking this morning (hey - it could happen)

My daughter called and was on her way to the Southern Tier to visit a friend outside of Belmont, and was going stop at a Angus beef farm. Meat shelves are empty here too, might explain the need for TP.

Her friend told her the hording hasn't been bad there - practical country folks, (I do miss living in a town that says "welcome to" it on both sides of the sign)

So she was going to stop in the little store and try to get us some paper towels for the puppy's house breaking -

but - what I got to thinking was - maybe hoping is a better word - as all these hoarding nit wits fill their garages and basements with more TP and paper towels than they will use in a decade - Maybe- just maybe - the paper companies will have to cut more pulp due to demand and thereby create more habitat for Grouse and woodcock

so - I have changed my attitude on this- I went to the store yesterday - saw the empty shelves and bad tempers - and thought the idiots should be quarantined for mental reasons -

today - I'm telling everyone - the world will end unless you rent a climate controlled storage unit and FILL it with paper products - they are soft - so just cram them in there
BUY BUY BUY

:rotf:

Had breakfast with a retired doctor this AM, whose daughter is an Epidemiologist. Bed shortage in Italy has resulted in a triage situation. Net result - If you are 75 and a 20 year old both have the virus - you're in trouble

My neighbor and his wife made their escape from Switzerland yesterday and arrived home in Fairbanks - right across the road from my house - late last night. I generally pick them up at the airport..... not this time! I staged their car in airport parking yesterday afternoon instead.

You were lucky Richard. While on a hunt in Kamchatka we were at the International airport in Petropavlovsk (capital city) and our guide directed us to the "Men's Room". It was a bare concrete building, away from the terminal, kind of a large outdoor outhouse with side wall openings for ventilation. It had a few bare light bulbs, no heat and ambient temp was about 40 F. There was a trough for #1 and stalls for #2 but without doors and no TP. Travelers were left to your own devices so to speak.

Yes, things could be worse.

Yeah, PPK is a bit of a dump, especially since the nuclear sub base shut down. Folks were cutting up grounded subs and making wood stoves from the metal when I was there. You may have been fortunate to have been sent to an outhouse. An inside facility would have looked like this one. It's old style and has a tank on the pipe behind and a chain pull for flushing. After I left the remote camp I was working in the big bears started coming out of hibernation and were hungry and the camp folks were shooting several per day for a while. There are some scary big bears over there from the pictures I saw.

It's pretty nasty stuff, especially after a long night on the loo due to camp-wide food poisoning from our squid stew dinner... Been there! It was great stew too, but the after effects on the 125 folks in camp was epic to say the least. That trip made for a great set of short stories that I wrote up. I love it when you don't have to exaggerate even one little bit to come up with a story that sounds way too far out to be even remotely believable. Mongolia was the same.

Have you seen the "March Madness Illness" bracket. West Virginia is finally #1 for something positive, the only state in the union without a reported Corona virus outbreak. But it wont last long, 7 miles East in Washington County, Pa, there are reported cases, and 7 miles to the WEST in Belmont County are cases.
My wife and I play on a USTA mixed doubles tennis team, and the USTA cancelled all league play, we were currently #1 in the region( the team).
Was supposed to be in Columbus, Ohio for a continuing ed meeting this morning, but it was cancelled also.

I'm remodeling my home and of course more then half was gutted when the Virus become a pandemic. Thanks goodness one bathroom was functional but now supplies for the other bathroom and laundry room have been delayed. Contractor got notice today that some of the supplies from Ohio will arrive sometime between July 1st and August 15th. Home Depot notified me new toilet and sink for the guest bathroom are on a pallet waiting for pick-up but they have no one to unload the pallet.
Kitchen re-model has been postponed!!!!

George I would bet a good, local plumbing supply house would have what you need and be open for business. Our Company (a plumbing & electrical supply house) is operating and sending out material every day for our local plumbers, electricians and building contractors. It isn't exactly business as usual, as we have closed our doors to walk-in business, but we are open and taking orders via phone, fax and email.

I am surprised to hear that. Well, kind of. Around me (in Western NY) the trades are all pretty much business as usual. Hardware stores and Home & Garden Centers have been deemed as essential but the state and are carrying on as normal and most are hiring additional people.
And when it comes to contractors, they are considered essential too. And that goes along with the companies that support/supply them too.
But I guess different areas may be handling things different than others.
But as far as Restrictions on businesses, there isn't much worse than here in NY.

Thank goodness the home centers are still open, I have a LOT to do around my house and a completely clear schedule on weekends to get it all done.
