I have a French double 16 ga that I am trying to ID the maker. It has a proof mark on the table that I can not find. An oval with a lions head & the letters G & F on either side of the lion. Pretty sure this is a makers ID. Any one know who it is? Thanks, Jim

Wouldn’t the proof house stamps be on the barrel flats?

Yes, the same proof mark is on the barrel flats, along with some others. This oval with the lion is one I have not seen before, & can not find any reference for it. The guy I purchased the gun from called it a Guild gun. I understand what a guild gun is, but a stamp like this looks like a manufactures mark. Jim.

Who is the maker of the gun? It could be a makers mark?

The PT is a Paris nitro proof. The Lion/GF? Not a proof mark. So it must be the maker. Whoever that may be...

does anyone have a copy of this book?
https://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?sts=t&cm_sp=SearchF-_-home-_-Results&kn=&an=john+walter&tn=gun+dictionary&isbn=
there are only a few pages on line A, G and S that I have found, but it looks very comprehensive
there are a lot of French makers listed
