I can find plenty of loads in my old loading manuals that use R 16 wads but they are obsolete. What is the difference between that wad and a Remington SP 16 wad?

There were almost a case of R-16 wads for sale on Gunbroker a year or two ago . I dicked around and didn’t bid needless to say that was the end of them . I would loved to have 5,000 of them . As it is I have 5,000 each of the two Claybuster renditions of the WAA-16 wad . I use SP-16’s but very sparingly .

According to the 1977 Remington Shotshell & Metallic Cartridge Component catalog the R 16 is for 1 ounce loads and the SP 16 is for 1 1/8 ounce loads.

75545

FWIW in the earlier days the 1 ounce wad was W 29932 and the 1 1/8 ounce wad W 29934.

So, a .125 filler wad in the SP 16 shot cup would make it close to being the equivalent of the RP 16, right???

Forgot to give Researcher a big 'ol thank you for the great info. This proves my assumption that someone on this forum has the answer to almost any shotgun question and that's nice to have such a resource a finger click away.

There are knockoffs on the market for the one ounce 16 gauge wad. Downrange gave me a few bags to try. They are very nice wads. I'll probably find some when I move my loading room. Everything is packed away right now. I also have more than a lifetime supply of Remington 1 ounce Game Loads.

Claybuster also makes a 1oz 16 wad.

Claybuster also makes a 1oz 16 wad.

They make two versions of the same wad ones a direct copy of the WAA-16 wad they call the 1 ounce version and they make another that looks the same except for a small bump on the inside to supposedly displace 1/8 ounce of shot and as you may expect they call it a 7/8 ounce wad .

For my own use I've found the CB WAA-16 to work very well in the Remington hulls with an ounce of shot making a nice flat crimp . In WIN hulls I've found the CB WAA-16 7/8 wad to make a nice flat crimp with an ounce of shot . Hence my reason for getting atleast a case of each .

Even though I have both of the CB 16 wads and a good supply of REM SP-16's I'd still like a few thousand of the old R-16 wads .
