Barrel work

I would like to have some Damascus barrels re-done. Who is the go to person for a barrel work? I would like to use someone nearby the DC/VA area but I am willing to ship barrels wherever if need be.

On another note I am wondering if a stock head transplant is possible. I have a stock whose head has been destroyed but the stock is intact up to the neck. If a head could be created to join with my butt, I could keep the original gun mostly intact. The original wood is beautiful and is from in a very early lifter, SN:1351 Any thoughts?

What you are talking about with the stock does not really make much sense. I mean, sure anything is possible, but most of the work in a restock is in the head and inletting, so no real work is saved.

The reason I am discussing a head transplant is not to save money or work. Rather, I want to preserve as much of the original gun as I can. The original butt-stock is nicely figured and quite beautiful. I would love to keep as much of the original gun intact as possible. I don’t even know if it’s possible, just looking to see if anyone has done this kind of work.
I thought I once read an article in which Trevallion had repaired a stock in this manner, but I can’t really recall. I am definitely looking for a sound repair that can afford me use of the gun; not for aesthetic purposes only.
The fact that Brian is calling this into question, probably tells me all I need to know. Like many of us, I’m a big fan of his work. If he can’t or wouldn’t do it, there are probably few others qualified to do the work, that could or would.
Brian does say anything is possible however... Hope springs eternal.

Dean - It can be done. Dave Trevallion has done a few and he has repaired some stock wrists and heads that most would advise to toss into the kindling box.

It is labor intensive but I still plan to have my back half spliced onto a new head.

Is Mr. Trevallion still in business, or retired? Who else, if anyone, is able to undertake such a task? This may be a case of just have a stock made and fitted, then have something cool made from the old stock to go along with the gun like accouterments for a take-down case etc. I'd love to hear everyone's opinion.

Hey Dean. Not sure if there is anything here that will help you or not but this is something that I would try. Go to the PGCA homepage, from there go to the Parker FAQ'S, from there go to "need a gunsmith". There is quite a bit of information in there that may give you some sense of direction. Best of luck.

You might try to contact Steven Dodd Hughes. He wrights the Custom Shop feature in Sports Afield and used to wright for Shooting Sportsman. I read an
where he's done this type of work.

Sometimes I think it would be good to have a special site or thread for the exchanges between Messrs. Spencer and Romig. We could charge extra for access. I'd pay to follow it, and it could be a great way to raise money for the Association.:rotf:

Include the exchanges between Edgar and George and I'm in. I have not had the pleasure of meeting George and Edgar together but I think if I do I will sit quietly in a corner and enjoy it.
