One of my favorite shotguns are Browning Superposed which I shoot weekly via sporting clays or wobble trap. But I need help identifying one which was brought to the club this week:
Grade I
Browning Superposed
Serial Number 9779XX

I've never seen any number like this before on a Superposed and can't identify the year of production. By all other markings it's a Superposed.

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

The digits that you "XX" out. Are those alpha followed by a number? In 1963 the serial numbers changed so that they ended with a letter followed by a number. The letter indicated gauge. For example 12 gauge was indicated by "S". The letter was followed by a digit indicating year of make. For example "S3" would be a 12 gauge made in 1963. Twenty gauge was "V".

It changed again in 1969 and again in 1975.

Hope this helps.

From the chart in Ned Schwing's book, The Browning Superposed, it appears as though the gun was made up in 1969.

But even Schwing states that the dates are "estimated dates of manufacture."

I have no idea what XX would designate. I have never seen that either.

Is the serial number the same everywhere it appears on the gun?

Guns made before the 1960s did not have letters in the numbers.

I’ve got a 20 gauge Superposed that was made in 1951 that’s nothing but numbers . Never seen XX in the serial number before .

If we could see pictures of the gun, maybe we could determine the age, consequently the serial number range.

Unfortunately the gentlemen left the club after showing us the gun. He said he would be back this coming Saturday if so I'm sure he'd allow me take photos and check for matching serial numbers.
Thanks for all your responses.
