Not trying to side track the tread. I think that's maybe the best Setter I have seen from Mr Runge. I have seen a wonderfully well done upgrade that the same Mr Runge signed, but it, as I recall had no dogs. Wonderful example, thanks for sharing.

I think it is interesting that the engraver on the parker obviously had the same dog in mind, and chose to SLIGHTLY change scenery, and change the pups position.
The Ithaca is a pretty scarce bird, a grade 3, 12 bore flues cannon breach waterfowl gun, straight stocked in Really nice Circassian, on a 10 gauge frame with factory 3” chambers.

03-05-2019, 10:52 PM

Engraving contractors and chief or head engravers are listed there. If you don't have TPS I can look it up tomorrow sometime.

.

Tom Jay
03-05-2019, 11:21 PM
Dean, I do not have a copy of TPS. Your look up would be appreciated. Thanks.

Dean Romig
03-06-2019, 07:23 AM
According to pg. 478 of TPS, William E. Avery headed Parker Brothers engraving fron 1877 to 1887 but there is no entry for any other individual as being a Parker Brothers engraving contractor during this period.

I think we must assume there were others though, as no one man could have engraved the many thousands of guns produced during this ten year prriod...

.

Tom Jay
03-06-2019, 01:58 PM
Thank you Dean. Insightful information. It would be interesting to see side by side comparisons of the dog engravings during this 10 year period to see if there’s a pattern/style to identify if there was one or multiple engravers doing just the dogs.

Dean Romig
03-06-2019, 05:37 PM
Generally speaking (again) the game scenes (dogs, birds, stags, etc.) were done by the head or chief engraver while the scroll was done by the journeymen engravers.

70806I never had a guided grouse hunt so here are two for consideration. They are found on a pre-war Kornbrath engraved Model 21 that was custom made for John Brewster who built bodies for Springfield Rolls Royce. It is a 5lb 11oz 20ga that shoots as good as it looks. It was previously Russ Bickel's gun

Russ Bickel was surely our friend.

.

Tom Kidd
03-06-2019, 11:23 PM
I met Russ when he opened a small gunshop on Rt 61 outside of Reading, Pa. with Mr. Banser. They had recently graduated from a Gunsmithing school in the Pittsburg area and one of his school projects was converting a Sterlingworth to a 45/70 double rifle. I stopped in and mentioned I liked Fox Guns and that led to a visit the next afternoon. That resulted in a friendship that lasted thru some 120 Ohio Gun Collector Shows and many other adventures over the years. He called me his mentor, and I was privileged to have had him as a friend. He left us way too soon. I also have his 16 bore Purdey Funeral Grade along with other personal items and they are all cherished by me.

Dean Romig
03-06-2019, 11:31 PM
I will be forever in awe of his skill and precision. Russ did a couple of Parker jobs for me and the finished product was at least as precisely perfect as the work of the Meriden artisans.

The Winner of the Vermont Guided Grouse hunt in October 2019 is
Phil Carr with his 1916 dh 28 gauge engraved during the Frederic W. Anschutz
Chief engraver period.

We loved the dogs athletic stance locked up on point. With his high head and excellent feather, reminiscent of my grandads dogs.

Congrats to Phil we cant wait to see his gun in person. Our plan is to photograph "the Gun" and take photos of our hunt in the peak of foliage season. for a winter Parker Pages article.

I may have told this before so forgive me in advance for repeating myself.

A while back when I showed up at work after a few days chasing grouse in Vermont’s NEK with my arms about shredded from briars, thornapple, hawthorn and such and the guys asked “What the blank happened to you?” I told them we have this game at grouse camp to see who can hold the cat underwater in the rain barrel the longest. I told them “The cat always seems to win.”

This thread is awesome, and many congrats to the winner, what a setter!

I know the competition is over, but this afternoon I just noticed the only Parker engraving of a Setter retrieving on my guns! And a duck at that!! Very early $125 grade lifter short 10. The engraving is on the trigger bow. Awful photography I know, time and resources were limited today!

Did Chris mention Bog holes??? One minute I’m looking at the back of Chris’s bird vest the next minute at his boots.

Those are grown over cellar holes of the first settlers, but they are amazingly huge when you think you’re kicking through a blackberry patch and you disappear into one.

Old Hemlock Osthaus had a knack for finding the cellar hole with the most accumulation of decades of decaying muck in it - and the amount he got on him was inversely proportional to the distance to running water to clean him off in

Congratulations Phil! I noticed the fine engraving when you let me shoot this during one of our Eurasion hunts. All your setters are beautiful, I know them well!

Thanks Chris. I am really looking forward to hunting grouse as the trees are starting to change color this fall.
I had forgotten that I had brought this Parker up to shoot dove with you.
Hopefully we can get together real soon before it gets too hot and have a sub gauge Parker dove shoot.
I love these Eurasian hunts as it allows me a chance to bring 5 or 6 shotguns to shoot that might not get used very much during the year otherwise.
