I'm sure we discussed this somewhere but I can't find it.

I am trying to put together information on the variations in the size of butt fixtures: rubber, dogs head and skeleton. I assume the size is tried to the frame size or gauge? How were they designated and/or marked and were they serial numbered to the gun? How many different sizes did they use? I assume that a specific size would span several frame sizes; 00 & 0 and maybe 1? 1.5, 2 and maybe 3? And 4 and all larger were the same (My guess here....)?

As an example, on a 1 frame, a skeleton would be a #? and a dogs head would be #? ... and so on....

You think we could gather up a picture of these examples for our FAQ section??

You are right robin, there are buttplate sizes that are loosly connected to frame sizes and gauge of the guns. The dhbp are numbered on the back size. Ssbps are also sized relative to frame-gauge, but they are not marked as so.

It can get a little confusing.

Basically the dhbp are sized, and marked 0, 1, 2 and 3. And then the largest size that are used on 8ga guns, but I do not think they are marked.

No. 0 is used on frame sizes 000, 00 and late 0.
No. 1 is used on frame sizes early 0, 1 and 1-1/2.
No. 2 is ised on frame size 2
No. 3 is used on frame size 3

The largest plate (bigger than 3) is used on 6 frame guns.

The design of the dogs on these plates are different for each size plate. So they are quickly identified that way too.

There is also the very first dhbp that was used on hammer guns and that was a different style all together. Not numbered. It was similar in size to a number 3 plate.
